Asian stock markets were hit by a brutal sell-off on Thursday as hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation revived fears that the Federal Reserve may keep interest rates higher for longer.

South Korea took the biggest hit. The KOSPI fell nearly 8%, triggering a circuit breaker during the session. Japan’s Nikkei dropped around 5%, with heavy losses across technology and semiconductor stocks. China and Taiwan also moved lower. Estimates circulating across the market put the combined destruction in equity value above $900 billion. Reuters

Why Are Asian Markets Crashing?

The trigger came from the latest U.S. CPI report.

September inflation rose 0.6% month over month and 3.7% year over year, above the 3.6% annual rate markets had expected. Inflation was also up from 3.4% in August.

Higher inflation creates a problem for stocks because it can keep the Fed from cutting rates and may even bring further rate increases back into consideration.

Higher interest rates increase the cost of borrowing and raise the discount rate investors use to value future corporate earnings. That can hit high-growth technology companies especially hard because much of their valuation depends on profits expected years into the future.

Asia has heavy exposure to semiconductors, AI infrastructure and technology.

Samsung Electronics dropped about 9.5%, SK Hynix lost more than 11%, and Japan’s SoftBank also suffered heavy selling.

This means the CPI report was not the only issue. Existing concerns about AI spending and elevated tech valuations added another layer of pressure.

The immediate focus now moves back to U.S. Treasury yields and Fed expectations.

If yields continue easing after their initial inflation-driven move, some pressure could come off Asian equities.

But if investors become convinced that another Fed increase is coming, expensive technology stocks could remain vulnerable.

For now, the latest CPI report has forced markets to reassess how quickly monetary conditions can become easier, and Asia’s tech-heavy indexes are taking the hardest hit.
