Binance said it would launch an NFT marketplace with low fees, positioning the venue around a nominal 1% processing fee as it courts creators, collectors, and traders looking for cheaper access to the NFT market.

What Binance Announced About Its NFT Marketplace

Binance said on April 30, 2021 that it would launch Binance NFT in June 2021, according to the company's announcement. The rollout was pitched as a commercial product launch rather than a filing-driven event. For related coverage, see SEC Launches Cyber and Emerging Technologies Unit in Crypto Enforcement Overhaul.

The marketplace was set to debut with two main venues: a "Premium Event" category and a "Trading Market," giving high-profile drops and everyday listings separate homes on the platform. For related coverage, see Bitmine Launches MAVAN Ethereum Staking Platform.

Binance's launch explainer said the platform would go live on Thursday, June 24, 2021. The first "Genesis" premium event featured newly digitized Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol works alongside a "100 Creators" program aimed at onboarding artists.

Helen Hai, who led the effort, said the goal was to build the largest NFT trading platform in the world by leaning on Binance's blockchain infrastructure and existing community.

"Our aim is to provide the largest NFT trading platform in the world," Hai said in the official launch materials.

Why Low Fees Could Matter for NFT Trading Activity

The defining differentiator is cost. Binance's explainer said Binance NFT would charge a nominal 1% processing fee and give creators and artists a 1% lifetime royalty, a structure meant to undercut higher-cost rivals.

For creators and sellers, a low flat fee reduces the drag on every sale and makes small-value listings more viable, while the built-in 1% lifetime royalty offers ongoing income on secondary trades. Buyers, meanwhile, tend to compare total transaction costs across marketplaces before choosing where to bid.

Lower fees alone do not guarantee sustained adoption. Liquidity, the quality of drops, and audience reach matter as much as headline pricing, and fee cuts can be matched by competitors. Similar dynamics have shaped later exchange-backed launches, such as OKX's move into an onchain marketplace.

What the Launch Signals for the Broader NFT Marketplace Race

Initial support was set to center on Binance Smart Chain and Ethereum, with possible later support for Tron, Flow, and WAX, The Block reported. Multi-chain reach widens the pool of assets a marketplace can list.

An exchange-backed entrant brings ready-made liquidity and a large user base, advantages that pure-play NFT platforms have to build from scratch. That same exchange muscle underpins Binance's push into new products elsewhere, including its derivatives launches on Binance Futures and further Treasury bond-linked perpetual contracts.

The BNB token has historically reacted to Binance product news. Decrypt reported that BNB hit an all-time high of $636.95 on May 1, 2021, days after the NFT marketplace announcement.

Present-day context is more subdued. BNB traded around $612.83, holding an $81.6 billion market cap on roughly $787.5 million in 24-hour volume.

Broader sentiment leans cautious, with the Crypto Fear and Greed Index reading 27, or Fear, a backdrop that tempers the enthusiasm seen around the original 2021 launch.
