A significant security breach involving approximately $6.3 billion on the Binance exchange has prompted a swift response from U.S. law enforcement agencies. These efforts have been crucial in mitigating a potential steep sell-off in the cryptocurrency market. Changpeng Zhao, founder of Binance, acknowledged the vital role played by the FBI, U.S. Secret Service, and the IRS in tracking and freezing some of the stolen assets.

The FBI disclosed in a statement dated October 31 that the attack, which occurred around October 29, was orchestrated by a cybercrime syndicate linked to North Korea. The group identified was TraderTraitor, known for its involvement in high-value cryptocurrency heists. Alongside the FBI, the investigation is being conducted with the U.S. Secret Service and IRS Criminal Investigations unit. They identified that the perpetrators primarily attempted to liquidate the stolen crypto-assets in exchange for Ethereum, warning these funds could be laundered through decentralized finance applications and instant crypto swap services.

Changpeng Zhao stated that multiple agencies, including the FBI, U.S. Secret Service, and IRS, provided significant support during the incident, particularly in tracking and freezing the funds.

Call to Halt Transactions from Suspect Wallets

U.S. authorities have urged the crypto industry to block transactions linked to the wallets used by the attackers. This appeal targets THORNode operators, RPC node operators, instant swap services, blockchain analytics firms, and DeFi platforms to cease related activities. The FBI also shared addresses believed to be used in the attack to expedite the identification of suspicious transfers.

The FBI requested the industry to halt transactions with the associated addresses to prevent further laundering of the stolen assets.

Following the incident’s disclosure, the cryptocurrency market experienced a significant downturn. Bitcoin dropped below $77,000, reaching a low around $76,000, marking one of the lowest levels seen in weeks. Major cryptocurrencies like Ethereum, XRP, Solana, and BNB also suffered notable losses.

Subsequent to these events, the selling pressure eased moderately. During early trading on November 1, Bitcoin stabilized around $78,000. Zhao credits law enforcement’s intervention with preventing a deeper price decline.

Changpeng Zhao, the founder of Binance, remains a prominent figure in the crypto industry. He noted in a social media post that many traders may have underestimated the impact of law enforcement during this tumultuous period.
