Spot bitcoin exchange traded funds have recorded zero days of net outflows so far in August 2026, according to Arkham Intelligence's on-chain tracking of ETF wallet activity.
On August 3, BlackRock added $111 million in bitcoin through IBIT, Fidelity added $33 million, and Franklin Templeton added $9 million. Franklin Templeton's purchase was its first bitcoin buy in more than thirty days.
All three of the largest active funds accumulating in the same session marks the broadest participation of the month. The streak also arrives immediately after the worst stretch these products have ever had.
Reading it as a recovery requires ignoring how small it is.
Where the ETFs are coming from
US spot bitcoin ETFs recorded roughly $5.4 billion in net outflows in the first half of 2026, the first negative half-year since launch. June alone produced about $4.5 billion in redemptions, the largest single month on record.
July was different but not better. Flows thinned toward zero rather than turning sharply negative, putting the month on track for the smallest net inflows since the funds launched in January 2024.
That is not panic selling. It is fresh capital simply not arriving, which is a different problem and arguably a slower one to fix.
Set against that, the cumulative achievement still stands. These products absorbed roughly $56.6 billion in net inflows across their first two years, one of the most successful ETF launches in the industry's history.

That table is the honest shape of it. A six-session positive run recovers a small fraction of one bad month.
Bitcoin has spent the year consolidating well below its October 2025 peak, and Optimisus tracked that grind through the mid-year reality check when bitcoin hit twenty-month lows.
The two data sets do not fully agree
This deserves flagging because most coverage skipped it. Arkham tracks ETF wallet movements on-chain in real time. Lookonchain, cited in the same reporting, put the August 3 single-day net figure at plus 1,600 BTC, roughly $102.3 million.
Lookonchain's seven-day net figure was plus 1,241 BTC. A seven-day total smaller than a single day inside it means the surrounding sessions were not uniformly positive on that measure.
On-chain wallet tracking and officially reported fund flows settle differently and on different schedules, so the two can genuinely disagree for several days. Neither data set is wrong. They answer slightly different questions.
Anyone building a position on a headline saying no fund has sold in August should know the underlying figure is a wallet-movement estimate, not a settled flow report.
Ethereum went the other way
Ether ETFs did not join the run. August 3 net flow was minus 6,558 ETH, about $12.3 million, with the seven-day figure at minus 16,270 ETH, roughly $30.4 million, according to Lookonchain.
One institutional data point may explain part of it, though in the opposite direction to what you would expect. Italy's largest bank, Intesa Sanpaolo, reportedly cut its BlackRock IBIT position by 94% in the second quarter while tripling its ethereum ETF exposure.
That is a rotation out of bitcoin funds into ether funds, which should have supported ETH flows rather than pressured them. What it does explain is softer institutional demand for IBIT specifically.
Whether that single allocator represents a broader pattern is unknown. One bank's quarterly filing is thin evidence for a trend.
Retail hates it, whales are busy
The sentiment backdrop is unusually lopsided. Santiment data shows the positive-to-negative commentary ratio for bitcoin fell to 0.54 since July 31, meaning bearish posts nearly doubled bullish ones across X, Reddit, and Telegram.
On-chain activity spiked at the same time. Santiment tracked 712,000 active bitcoin addresses over seven days, a three-month high, and 61,800 whale transactions above $100,000, a five-month high.
Whale Alert flagged a single transfer of 6,196 BTC, around $397 million, on August 4, with a separate 2,241 BTC moving to Coinbase Institutional the same day.
Before reading any of that as accumulation, note the confound. The Coldcard hardware wallet exploit that began July 30 is cited as one driver of the address activity, as affected holders moved funds to fresh seeds.
Forced migration and voluntary buying look identical on a chart of active addresses. Institutional flows running positive against deep retail pessimism has preceded recoveries in prior cycles, and it has also preceded further declines.
Bitcoin's price behavior this year has repeatedly diverged from what crypto-linked equities were signaling, which is a reminder that no single indicator is carrying much predictive weight right now.
The regulatory variable nobody has resolved
Flow analysts keep pointing at the same overhang. The CLARITY Act remains unresolved in the Senate, and renewed uncertainty after banks moved to challenge the bill has been cited as a reason allocators paused.
Optimisus covered what is actually blocking the CLARITY Act and why the timeline slipped. Institutions building multi-year allocations want jurisdiction settled between the SEC and the CFTC before they size up.
Until that happens, ETF flows are likely to stay reactive rather than structural. A slower shift is running underneath as well.
Tokenized products are pulling institutional attention that used to default to the ETF wrapper, including Franklin Templeton's own uSPX ETF arriving on-chain through Mantle and xStocks.
What would make this real
Three tests. Whether Franklin Templeton and the other funds that paused through July keep adding into mid-August rather than making one appearance.
Whether IBIT's monthly figure turns positive, given that fund lost roughly $1.83 billion over a recent one-month window. And whether ether ETF redemptions stop, because a sustained split between the two complexes would signal rotation rather than returning demand.
A single reversal day at any of the three major funds changes this narrative quickly. Six good sessions after eight months of bleeding is a data point, not a trend.
