Spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) in the United States drew in $517 million on August 19, marking their largest single-day inflow since early May. Space for ether ETFs also saw robust activity, with $189 million in net subscriptions—the biggest since October 2025, according to data from crypto analytics platform SoSoValue.

ETF flows fuel market rally

The renewed inflows occurred as bitcoin’s price surged past $69,000 and ether rallied 18%, reaching approximately $2,250. Analysts have pointed to sustained institutional buying support as a key factor in the upward momentum, with ETF-related demand propelling the market out of a prolonged consolidation period during the summer months.

Bitcoin had previously struggled to climb above the $64,000 resistance level in recent months, coinciding with tepid ETF inflows and overall subdued trading activity. The recent surge in investment through ETFs appears to have acted as a catalyst for the latest price breakout.

Solana and XRP funds post gains, Hyperliquid sees outflow

Smaller inflows were also recorded across funds tracking XRP and Solana. Hyperliquid, a crypto platform that offers derivative products, was the exception with an outflow of approximately $2 million on the same day.

Mini dictionary: Hyperliquid is a decentralized perpetuals exchange focused on offering on-chain leveraged trading without relying on traditional order books. It allows users to speculate on the price movements of major cryptocurrencies using perpetual contracts, which do not have fixed expirations.

Bears liquidated as shorts unwind

The breakout caught bearish traders off guard. Short positions across crypto markets experienced record liquidations of $2.7 billion as bitcoin rapidly approached the $70,000 mark. This forced unwinding of short bets often accelerates rallies when leverage is skewed against the prevailing market trend.

The inflows suggest that institutional buyers are returning as digital asset prices break through key resistance levels, although the durability of this demand over the following days remains uncertain.

Outlook: Uncertainty remains over sustained demand

Market participants are watching closely to determine if these large ETF inflows represent a sustained shift in sentiment or a short-lived spike. While the breakout and heavy inflows show signs of renewed confidence, bitcoin’s history of sharp reversals from similar levels has made some investors cautious.

A steady continuation of ETF purchases at this scale over multiple days would indicate a more persistent institutional presence. In contrast, a rapid decrease in inflows could see bitcoin retest the $64,000 support zone, which has defined the market’s recent consolidation range.

Ether’s strong performance has also fueled speculation about the role of spot ETFs in supporting asset prices and attracting new capital. Market observers are keenly following further developments to gauge whether this momentum can be maintained across major cryptocurrencies.
