Bitcoin Mining Giant Selling BTC Again?

MARA Holdings (@MARA), the largest publicly traded Bitcoin miner, has moved 1,000 $BTC, worth about $82.8 million, to Binance (@binance) and Gate (@Gate_io) over the past five days, according to onchain analytics platform Lookonchain.

Miners sending coins to exchanges is often read as preparation to sell. The deposits alone, however, do not confirm a sale. Only the transfer records from wallets linked to MARA have been identified so far, and the purpose of the transactions has not been disclosed, Bloomingbit reported.

Why exchange deposits draw attention

Onchain analysts watch exchange inflows because coins that land on a trading venue are more likely to be sold than coins held in cold storage, according to an analysis by Spendnode. The same piece notes that splitting deposits across two exchanges can reduce slippage on a sale, though it can also reflect how a trading desk operates across several liquidity pools.

The latest transfers follow another flagged movement earlier this month. Lookonchain identified a transfer of 996 BTC from MARA-linked wallets to Galaxy Digital on October 9, though blockchain records did not establish whether those coins were sold.

A record of selling Bitcoin to fund its strategy

MARA has a track record of selling Bitcoin. In its Q3 2025 shareholder letter filed with the SEC, the company said it had made a strategic change and may sell a portion of the bitcoin produced from its mining operations to support operating expenses.

The pace picked up in 2026. Blockspace reported that, according to the company's Aug. 6 filing, MARA sold 23,093 bitcoin for roughly $1.6 billion in the first half of the year. The biggest use of cash was $912.8 million to buy back about $1 billion of principal on its zero-coupon convertible notes due 2030 and 2031. The miner ended June with 35,577 bitcoin, down from 53,822 at the end of 2025.

The company has also been pushing into AI and energy infrastructure. Crypto Briefing reported that MARA agreed to a $1.5 billion deal to buy Long Ridge Energy & Power, which includes a 505 MW gas-fired plant in Ohio and more than 1,600 acres for future AI and high-performance computing development.

Whether the latest 1,000 BTC will be sold, used as collateral or moved for another reason will likely become clear in MARA's next financial disclosures. For now, the onchain data shows where the coins went, not what orders were placed.
