Key Insights:

  • Mt. Gox repayment delay makes Bitcoin news as its deadline moves to October 31, 2027.
  • Incomplete procedures and processing issues leave many Mt. Gox creditors unpaid.
  • Bitcoin traded at $81,308.67, down 1.68%, with 24-hour trading volume of $23.92B.

In the latest Bitcoin news, Mt. Gox has confirmed another repayment delay, moving the deadline to October 31, 2027.

Rehabilitation trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi secured court approval after incomplete procedures and processing problems left creditors unpaid. The extension replaces the October 31, 2026, deadline and gives him another 12 months to continue the pending distributions.

Bitcoin News Details the Mt. Gox Repayment Extension

Kobayashi said he had completed three repayment categories for creditors who provided the required information and encountered no issues.

These include Base Repayment, Early Lump-Sum Repayment, and Intermediate Repayment. However, many creditors have yet to complete the procedures necessary to receive their funds.

Others remain unpaid despite completing those steps because problems arose during processing.

The trustee said he wanted to complete these repayments wherever reasonably practicable. However, the Mt. Gox repayment deadline now falls on October 31, 2027, in Japan Standard Time.

The notice on the Bitcoin news changes the deadline without introducing another repayment category or revising creditors’ entitlements under the rehabilitation plan.

It also provides no updated count of unpaid creditors or remaining Bitcoin and other assets awaiting distribution. The announcement focuses on outstanding payments within the existing rehabilitation process.

Under the rehabilitation plan, Base Repayment forms part of the compensation framework. Early Lump-Sum Repayment and Intermediate Repayment act as separate arrangements within that process.

The extension covers these existing categories as the trustee continues work on payments that remain outstanding.

For claim inquiries, creditors can log into the online rehabilitation claims system and open the frequently asked questions section. A separate inquiry form also accepts requests without a login.

However, the trustee warned that this route could complicate identity checks and responses. Heavy inquiry volumes may also delay replies.

Repeated Delays Follow Mt. Gox’s 2014 Collapse

The latest extension on Bitcoin news follows several postponements since the original October 2023 target. In October 2024, the trustee moved the deadline from October 2024 to October 2025.

Another extension followed in October 2025, pushing the completion date to October 31, 2026. Each revision moved the deadline forward by one year while outstanding claims remained unresolved.

By October 2025, about 19,500 creditors had received repayments, according to reporting at the time.

Other claims remained outstanding because creditors had incomplete procedures or encountered processing difficulties. That historical figure does not give a current total for creditors awaiting payment under the latest extension.

The repayment process stems from Mt. Gox’s collapse in 2014, when the Tokyo exchange filed for bankruptcy. The exchange lost approximately 850,000 BTC after handling roughly 70% of global Bitcoin trading volume at its peak. Following that, the withdrawal problems and missing funds forced it to close.

In addition to the latest Bitcoin news, creditors later pursued compensation through Japan’s civil rehabilitation process after losing access to their assets for years.

Crypto repayments began in July 2024 through approved exchanges, including Kraken and Bitstamp. Those payouts included Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash under the court-approved rehabilitation framework for eligible creditors.

BTC Price Records a Decline Following the Mt. Gox Repayment Update

Alongside the repayment update, Bitcoin’s price, according to CoinMarketCap data, traded at $81,308.67, down 1.68% over 24 hours. The trading volume across the same period reached $23,923,549,885. The cryptocurrency’s total market capitalization stood at $1,634,210,157,482 in that snapshot.

The CoinMarketCap data also showed a circulating supply of 20,098,843 BTC, against a maximum supply of 21 million coins.
