Key Insights

  • Bitcoin price broke $86,000 after buyers cleared heavy $85,000 resistance.
  • Reduced sell liquidity helped BTC accelerate above its weeklong trading range.
  • Short liquidations strengthened the breakout as bearish leveraged positions closed.

Bitcoin price climbed above $86,000 on Oct. 2 after buyers cleared resistance near $85,000. Binance data showed BTC near $86,565, up about 3% over 24 hours. The move followed thinner sell-side liquidity and growing pressure on short positions.

The breakout mattered because Bitcoin had repeatedly failed near the same resistance zone. A clean move above that area improved short-term structure and forced bearish derivatives positions to close. Traders now watch whether former resistance can hold as support.

Bitcoin Price Breaks Through $85,000 Resistance

Binance data showed Bitcoin reached a 24-hour high near $86,837 on Oct. 2. The exchange also showed roughly $37.1 billion in 24-hour Bitcoin trading volume. That placed the price of bitcoin well above its earlier daily low near $83,133.

TradingView data also showed BTC trading above $86,300 across major markets. Bitstamp recorded an intraday high near $86,857, while Binance perpetual futures reached about $86,888. Those figures confirmed that the breakout extended across spot and derivatives venues.

Glassnode said buyers removed a large sell wall around $85,000 on Oct. 1. The research firm said that wall had blocked price advances for almost one week. It added that many remaining sell orders above that level were later removed.

That order-book shift reduced immediate ask liquidity above the previous ceiling. Lower sell liquidity can allow prices to move faster when aggressive buying enters. The breakout above $86,000 followed that reduction in overhead supply.

Bitcoin Price Rally Triggers Short Squeeze

Derivatives positioning also amplified the move after BTC cleared resistance. Public exchange data showed $45.96 million in Bitcoin shorts liquidated within one hour. The tally covered Binance, Bybit and OKX during the breakout.

Bitcoin gained 1.32% during that hour, rising from $85,260 to $86,381. Short liquidations accounted for nearly all Bitcoin (BTC) liquidations across those three exchanges. Forced closures created additional buying as exchanges exited losing bearish positions.

CoinGlass separately provides liquidation heatmaps using data aggregated from major exchange APIs. Its methodology tracks leveraged positions vulnerable to forced closure as prices approach modeled liquidation areas.

Alex Marzell wrote on X that BTC had spent about one week below $85,500. He said one hourly candle then pushed through that level toward $86,900. Marzell identified $85,500 as the first level to watch after the breakout.

His framework placed $88,000 as the next nearby upside area if support held. He also identified $84,500 as a possible retest zone after a failed hold. Those levels describe a trading framework rather than a guaranteed price path.

BTC Crypto Structure Improves Above Former Resistance

Ella, a crypto market commentator, had earlier identified $84,000-$84,200 as an important support area. She said repeated reactions above the $82,700 low showed buyers entering progressively earlier. Her analysis placed $86,000-$86,500 back in focus after a clean break above $85,000.

The latest move pushed BTC through that upper area. However, price still approached resistance near the late-September highs. TradingView showed Bitstamp reaching around $86,857 during the session before prices eased from the peak.

The broader structure also remained sensitive to macro conditions and recent institutional demand through U.S. spot Bitcoin funds. U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data showed August consumer prices rose 0.4% month over month. Annual inflation stood at 3.4%, while core inflation measured 2.4%.

Those readings kept interest-rate expectations relevant for risk assets. The next major U.S. inflation release will cover September data. The Bureau of Labor Statistics scheduled that Consumer Price Index report for Oct. 14.

Bitcoin Price Faces $88,000 Test After Breakout

The immediate technical question now centers on whether buyers can defend the former breakout area. Glassnode’s order-book data suggested reduced selling pressure directly above $85,000. That condition supported faster movement once buyers crossed the level.

Marzell’s framework placed $85,500 as near-term support and $88,000 as the next upside test. A failure below that support would reopen the possibility of a deeper retest. Traders would then watch the mid-$84,000 area for another reaction.

For now, the Bitcoin price move reflects three linked forces. Buyers cleared a persistent sell wall, overhead liquidity thinned, and short liquidations strengthened momentum. The next verifiable macro catalyst arrives Oct. 14 with the September U.S. inflation report.
