Why is Bitcoin up today?

Bitcoin's move higher is tied to macroeconomic data. The July U.S. jobs report, released Friday, badly missed expectations: economists had forecast about 80,000 new jobs, but the economy instead lost 23,000, while the unemployment rate ticked to 4.1%.

Weak labor data makes another Fed rate hike harder to justify, and lower rates are generally supportive of risk assets like Bitcoin. Following the report, futures markets moved to price in roughly a 56% chance the Fed pauses at its September 16 meeting, and BTC tagged an August high above $65,300.

Continued inflows into U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs and steady accumulation by large holders, or "whales," have added support. Working against that backdrop are lingering headwinds, including regulatory uncertainty, a debate over the proposed BIP 110 protocol change that has raised hard-fork chatter, and an ongoing Coldcard hardware-wallet exploit whose losses have topped $111 million.

What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin is the world's first and largest cryptocurrency, launched in January 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto. It runs on a decentralized blockchain secured by proof-of-work mining and has a fixed supply cap of 21 million coins, a scarcity that underpins its "digital gold" narrative. Bitcoin's supply is cut roughly every four years through an event called the halving; the most recent, in April 2024, reduced the block reward to 3.125 BTC.
