A sharp rise in Bitcoin ($BTC) prices over the past ten days has added an estimated $10 billion to the paper fortune of Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, as the asset climbed toward $87,000.
Nakamoto is estimated to hold roughly 1.1 million BTC, placing the total value of the stash near $95 billion at recent prices. The coins have not moved since 2010, making the holding one of the most closely watched concentrations of wealth in any asset class.
How Satoshi's Holdings Were Identified
The addresses were identified using a clustering pattern known as the Patoshi Pattern, which infers the identities of miners on the blockchain via a privacy flaw in early Bitcoin clients. Arkham Intelligence's tags are derived from this known mining pattern and include the only known addresses from which Satoshi spent BTC. Arkham's research indicates he acquired this amount as a reward for mining 22,000 blocks.
Some 22,000 addresses believed to have belonged to Bitcoin's creator have been added to Arkham, bringing his estimated on-chain balance to 1.096 million BTC. Those holdings represent roughly 5.5% of the total Bitcoin supply in circulation.
A Dormant Fortune That Markets Still Watch
None of these coins have ever moved from their original addresses since 2010, a fact that adds to both the mystery and the market significance. Any movement from these wallets would almost certainly trigger immediate market reaction, given the scale of the position relative to daily trading volumes.
The dormant funds continue to fuel ongoing discussions about their potential impact on the cryptocurrency market, as the sheer size of the holdings underscores the influence Nakamoto could exert if these bitcoins were ever moved or sold.
The identity of Satoshi Nakamoto remains officially unknown. Nakamoto remained active in Bitcoin's development until late 2010, before handing over repository keys to Gavin Andresen and disappearing from public view in April 2011.
