What to Know

  • Bitcoin gained roughly 9% in September and crossed $87,000 as ETF demand revived expectations for its historically strong October performance.
  • In 2025, Bitcoin reached a record above $126,000 before trade tensions and liquidations drove a roughly 4% monthly October decline.
  • Broader altcoin gains support market momentum, while ETF flows and economic conditions remain central to Bitcoin’s overall October direction.

Bitcoin (BTC) approaches October with strong September gains and renewed ETF demand, bringing its favorable seasonal record back into view. The cryptocurrency recently climbed above $87,000 for the first time in eight months, supported by short covering and stronger liquidity.

BTC has gained roughly 9% in September, building on an advance of about 25% during August. Those gains have revived expectations for “Uptober,” the name traders use for Bitcoin’s historically strong performance during October.

Between 2013 and 2025, Bitcoin ended October higher in 10 of 13 years, with an average monthly return near 19%. However, last year demonstrated that even strong historical patterns can break when economic developments unsettle investors.

Bitcoin began October 2025 near $119,000 and climbed above $126,000, setting a record as U.S. spot ETFs attracted substantial demand. Those funds drew approximately $4.7 billion during the month’s first half, reinforcing confidence in the initial advance.

Bitcoin’s 2025 October Reversal Tests the Uptober Narrative

A U.S.-China trade dispute then unsettled financial markets and triggered widespread cryptocurrency liquidations, overwhelming the earlier support from ETF inflows. Bitcoin fell toward $105,000 and ended October roughly 4% lower, ending seven consecutive years of positive October returns.

Ethereum (ETH) lost about 6% to 7% during the month, while broader altcoin benchmarks recorded even steeper declines. Consequently, the selloff showed that favorable seasonality offered little protection when investors rapidly reduced their exposure to risk.

This year’s October setup features wider participation across the cryptocurrency market, following substantial September gains in several major altcoins. Solana (SOL), XRP, NEAR, Chainlink (LINK) and Zcash (ZEC) have all advanced, while Ethereum has built on its August rally.

Broader gains can help sustain demand because investors are buying assets beyond Bitcoin, although they can also attract leveraged traders. If prices weaken, liquidations among those traders could deepen a decline and spread selling pressure across multiple cryptocurrencies.

ETF flows remain another measure of whether the rally has enough support to extend through October. Sustained inflows could help buyers defend recent gains, provided wider economic conditions do not prompt another broad retreat from risk.

September’s advance also means investors have already priced in some expectations for a strong October. Further gains will depend on whether demand keeps pace with those expectations as the month progresses.

Bitcoin’s historical October record supports the bullish case, but its 2025 reversal shows why the result remains uncertain. ETF demand, liquidity and wider economic developments will determine whether this year follows the pattern.
