Bitcoin experienced a volatile session, dropping to $81,000 in early Asian trading before quickly rebounding above $84,000. By early Tuesday, Bitcoin was trading near $83,500, demonstrating significant intraday movement across the $3,000 range.

Altcoins struggle as ZEC and HYPE underperform

While Bitcoin managed to recover much of its earlier losses, most major altcoins lagged behind. Zcash (ZEC), a privacy-focused cryptocurrency, registered the sharpest decline among leading altcoins, sliding nearly 8% to around $1,210.

HYPE, another digital asset, lost almost 6% to about $82. Other prominent tokens also dropped: Solana (SOL) and Dogecoin (DOGE) each decreased by 4%, and XRP, a token often associated with Ripple’s payments network, fell 3% to $1.36. Ethereum (ETH) and Binance Coin (BNB) recorded smaller slides, declining between 1% and 2%.

Mini dictionary: Zcash (ZEC) is a cryptocurrency aiming to provide enhanced privacy and selective transparency of transactions using advanced cryptography. HYPE refers to an altcoin that has recently gained attention for its volatility but is less established compared to major tokens like Bitcoin or Ethereum.

The Crypto Fear & Greed Index, which measures digital asset market sentiment, slipped to 57, remaining in the “greed” zone but marking the lowest level since September 18.

Broader markets react to tech and macro pressures

Beyond crypto, global equity markets presented a mixed picture. Chipmaker stocks continued a multi-day downturn as the main chip sector ETF was poised for its sixth consecutive daily loss. Nasdaq 100 futures were down 0.5%, reflecting ongoing concerns regarding the sustainability of artificial intelligence spending amid wider safety and funding challenges.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. opened the U.S. earnings season with early trading showing its shares down more than 2%. Meanwhile, European stocks edged higher, with the Stoxx 600 index climbing 0.4%, bolstered by lower oil prices and declining bond yields across the region.

U.S. inflation data due Thursday is expected to serve as the next major indicator for markets, potentially influencing both crypto and equity sentiment.
