Bitcoin experienced a sharp rally to nearly $85,000 late Wednesday before reversing course, dropping to around $81,800 within hours. This swift $3,000 fluctuation occurred in less than a day and left the world’s leading cryptocurrency down approximately 2% over the past 24 hours.

Heavy liquidations amid volatile moves

The dramatic price movement resulted in extensive liquidations across the market. According to data provider CoinGlass, traders saw approximately $431 million in leveraged positions forcefully closed during the 24-hour period. Liquidations occur when cryptocurrency exchanges automatically end leveraged trades if account balances fall below a required threshold, in an attempt to prevent further losses.

Short sellers, betting on a decline in price, were squeezed as Bitcoin surged upward. Of the total liquidations, roughly $173 million affected short positions during the initial rally. However, as the price quickly dropped, bullish traders faced even greater losses. Over the past 12 hours, long positions accounted for about $210 million of the $222 million in liquidations.

One of the hardest-hit trades was a single $11.8 million Bitcoin long position on Binance, which was liquidated near the $83,500 mark.

The market’s rapid round trip triggered $431 million in total liquidations, with $210 million in long positions wiped out over the final 12 hours of trading.

Broader altcoin declines

Major altcoins also saw notable losses during the same period. HYPE declined 4.5% to approximately $78. DOGE dropped nearly 4%, and SOL retreated 3%. Ether slipped 2% and traded just below $2,400. In contrast, XMR bucked the broader trend, surging 11% to about $650, based on CoinDesk data.

Key support and external market pressure

Bitcoin’s dip took it below the $82,500 threshold, a level which several market analysts have identified as important. A sustained break below this area could, according to some observers, open the door for a deeper correction towards $70,000.

Meanwhile, broader technology markets provided little support. Nasdaq 100 futures declined 1.1% after Tesla revised its capital expenditure plans lower and Lam Research reported a cautious outlook.

Breaking below $82,500 raises the risk of a continued move toward $70,000 if selling pressure persists, according to market watchers.
