A long-dormant Bitcoin wallet, historically linked to one of the blockchain’s earliest mining operations, has executed a major on-chain transfer totaling 4,500 BTC, equivalent to $381.38 million. The entire balance from the source address, “bc1qlnexsqagmk27ju9dmmvj47016…,” was sent in a single transaction to a new, clean address, “bc1qpls5rs7z53avm0k6ohh40y301….”

Multi-year holding strategy yields record gains

According to data compiled by Arkham Intelligence, the originating wallet now shows a balance of zero for the first time in years. This address first received the 4,500 BTC deposit precisely four years ago, when the coins were valued at $187.38 million. During this period, the wallet’s owner refrained from making any movements, effectively riding out major market cycles including Bitcoin’s surge to its most recent all-time high above $600 million for this batch of coins in 2025.

Holding the assets uninterrupted for four years resulted in a notional profit of $194 million, highlighting the scale of unrealized gains from early accumulation and patient strategy.

The wallet’s four-year “sleep” resulted in $194 million in unrealized profit, drawing speculation regarding the investor’s strategy and next moves.

Observers noted the transfer took place as Bitcoin maintained a market price of $84,070, underscoring the substantial appreciation since the original deposit.

Ancient mining wallets move in bulk but avoid spot market impact

Historical analysis on Arkham Intelligence indicates that this wallet is directly linked to one of the oldest Bitcoin mining collectives, with current holdings estimated at 33,000 BTC distributed across several addresses.

This group has consistently structured its holdings in tranches of 4,500 BTC per address, a method dating back to Bitcoin’s early days when a small community of cypherpunks maintained large network shares and the asset traded for only a few cents.

The recent transfer bundled the entire tranche into a single output, moving all 4,500 BTC to a brand-new, unused address without further subdivision. The transaction avoided direct transfers to known exchange wallets such as Binance or Coinbase, resulting in minimal visibility for the broader spot market. Bitcoin continued trading with a weekly gain of 3.6%.

Date of Deposit 4,500 BTC Value BTC Price 4 years ago $187.38 million ~$41,640 At peak (2025) >$600 million >$133,000 Now $381.38 million $84,070

Market analysts suggested the transfer could signify either a planned migration to new private keys for security purposes or preparations for a major over-the-counter (OTC) sale. OTC deals take place outside of public exchange order books, minimizing short-term impact on market prices.

The operation’s precise execution and the avoidance of exchange deposits underscored the proficiency typical of early Bitcoin adopters, many of whom have remained anonymous as market players.

Observers continue monitoring the destination address, watching for any signs of distribution or potential market moves linked to this “OG” whale.

Mini dictionary: OTC (Over-the-Counter), refers to direct trades of assets between parties, often in large amounts, without processing through centralized exchange order books. OTC deals are preferred by large investors (“whales”) to avoid sudden price swings on the public market.
