  • WBTC moves to Chainlink CCIP as BitGo upgrades infrastructure.
  • Migration follows concerns around LayerZero bridge security models.
  • Chainlink CCIP adoption reaches nearly $15 billion in assets.

BitGo has selected Chainlink CCIP for Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), moving the $7.4 billion asset away from LayerZero’s cross-chain standard. The WBTC migration makes Chainlink CCIP the exclusive interoperability solution for future BitGo-issued assets. The move follows increased attention on bridge security after the $292 million KelpDAO exploit.

The WBTC migration represents one of the largest infrastructure changes involving a tokenized Bitcoin asset. BitGo said the transition will align WBTC deployments with Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Token standard.

According to BitGo, the company will keep control over token contracts, transfer limits and operational settings. The new structure allows BitGo to manage security parameters directly while using Chainlink CCIP for blockchain transfers.

The shift adds WBTC to a growing list of assets moving toward Chainlink’s infrastructure. Chainlink representatives said publicly announced migrations from LayerZero now represent nearly $15 billion in total value.

WBTC remains the largest wrapped Bitcoin token, accounting for about 45% of the wrapped Bitcoin market. The asset is widely used across decentralized finance platforms that require Bitcoin exposure on other networks.

WBTC Migration Follows Bridge Security Concerns

The WBTC migration comes after several projects reconsidered cross-chain infrastructure following the KelpDAO bridge exploit. The incident involved a $292 million loss linked to a LayerZero-powered bridge configuration.

Chainlink said CCIP uses a network of independent security-reviewed node operators. It also provides features such as rate limits and transfer controls designed to reduce risks during cross-chain transactions.

LayerZero has updated its security framework since the exploit. Earlier analysis found many applications were using limited verifier configurations that increased exposure to single points of failure.

Meanwhile, BitGo continues expanding its institutional infrastructure beyond custody services. The company recently introduced tools focused on treasury management, asset movement and digital asset security.

The WBTC migration does not change ownership of the token contracts, as BitGo will continue maintaining control over WBTC operations. The company has not disclosed whether additional assets using LayerZero will follow the same path.
