Igor Runets, the founder of BitRiver, Russia’s largest cryptocurrency mining company, faces charges of fraud amounting to $12.5 million. Runets, previously under house arrest, has now been transferred to prison for a preliminary hearing. The charges stem from allegations that he failed to deliver cryptocurrency mining equipment to Infrastructure of Siberia, a subsidiary of Runets.
Details of the Allegations
Investigators in Russia say Runets signed an $8 million equipment supply contract with Infrastructure of Siberia in 2023 but failed to fulfill it. This is alleged to have resulted in a loss of 1 billion rubles (approximately $12.5 million). Runets had previously faced tax evasion charges and was detained in February on those charges.
BitRiver and the Economic Challenges
Igor Runets pioneered cryptocurrency mining in Russia by founding BitRiver in 2017. However, Russia’s six-year ban on cryptocurrency mining in 10 regions negatively impacted BitRiver’s data center operations in Siberia. These restrictions led to financial difficulties for the company. In February, bankruptcy proceedings were initiated against Group of Companies Fox, BitRiver’s main shareholder.
BitRiver once operated with 15 data centers and over 175,000 servers in Siberia. However, current legal and economic challenges are making it difficult for the company to continue its operations. The accusations facing Runets could have serious implications for the company’s future.
