Bitwise Asset Management has introduced automated portfolios built on Coinbase’s tokenized US stocks, targeting accredited investors outside the United States. This move aims to offer clients access to preset investment strategies while enabling them to maintain custody of their tokenized assets within their personal non-custodial wallets.

Automated portfolio strategies and tokenized stock access

The automated portfolios are powered by Coinbase’s newly released tokenized stocks, which represent shares in leading US companies. Bitwise, an established asset manager known for its cryptocurrency and blockchain-focused investment products, is providing the investment strategies, while Glider oversees the portfolio rebalancing and trade execution based on those models.

The initial set of portfolios includes three primary strategies: Mag7X, Robotics, and AI Leaders. These strategies focus on exposure to top technology and innovation-driven companies such as Apple, Nvidia, Microsoft, Tesla, and SpaceX.

Tokenized listed stocks, a growing class of blockchain-based financial instruments, have reached a total market capitalization of $2.49 billion. In the past month, this segment has recorded a 5.18% increase, with 2.25 million holders and monthly transfer volumes totaling $27.28 billion, as reported by rwa.xyz.

Mini dictionary: Tokenized stocks are digital representations of traditional stocks created on a blockchain, enabling features like fractional ownership, 24/7 trading, and integration with decentralized finance protocols.

Non-custodial model and integration with DeFi

Unlike conventional investment funds, where assets are typically held by a custodian, these tokenized US stock portfolios allow users to retain tokens in their non-custodial wallets. Bitwise determines the portfolio methodology, and Glider, an automated rebalancing platform, manages the adjustment of asset weights as needed. Bitwise has set a methodology access fee of 0.15%, which does not include separate trading or Glider platform fees.

With users keeping direct ownership of the underlying stock tokens, Bitwise indicated that these digital assets are also eligible for use within DeFi protocols for activities such as lending or borrowing. However, the company cautioned that these opportunities are subject to risks associated with decentralized protocols.

Bitwise emphasized that, by maintaining control of tokenized stocks in their own wallets, investors could also participate in DeFi lending or borrowing, though these activities remain subject to protocol-related risks.

This structural shift is designed to grant investors greater flexibility and autonomy compared to traditional investment products.

Recent developments on Base network

The introduction of these portfolios occurred shortly after Coinbase brought its tokenized US stocks live on the Base network. This update enables eligible non-US users to access, trade, and use the tokenized equities within DeFi applications on a round-the-clock basis.

Base is a layer 2 blockchain solution developed by Coinbase, designed to increase scalability and reduce transaction costs while maintaining Ethereum compatibility.

This development further expands the accessibility of US equities to global investors by bridging traditional finance and decentralized financial infrastructure.

Traders now have the option to interact with tokenized stocks 24/7 via Base, broadening both the use cases and the accessibility of these assets.

The platform’s open architecture is expected to increase participation in both stock investing and DeFi markets beyond US borders.
