Bitcoin traders spent much of Sunday discussing a possible “Black Monday,” but BTC itself refused to follow the fear.

Santiment data shows mentions of “black monday” reached 176 on October 18, compared with fewer than two mentions per day on average over the previous 60 days.

Despite that sudden explosion in bearish discussion, Bitcoin finished Sunday close to $82,000 and gained just under 1% for the day.

Today, Bitcoin price broke $83K. That creates an interesting disconnect between price and sentiment heading into Monday.

“Black Monday” Mentions Suddenly Exploded

Santiment’s chart tracks Bitcoin alongside social mentions of the phrase “black monday” between September 7 and October 18.

For most of that period, the phrase was barely discussed.

That changed dramatically on October 18.

The busiest six-hour period came between 18:00 and 24:00 UTC, when 82 mentions were recorded. That window also coincided with the reopening of U.S. futures, which likely helped intensify fears about what Monday could bring.

General references to a “crash” also reached 105 mentions. Santiment described that as elevated for a Sunday, although still within the range recorded over the previous 90 days.

The timing is especially notable because October 19 marks the 39th anniversary of the 1987 Black Monday crash.

Does Extreme Fear Help Bitcoin?

I would be careful about treating these numbers as a direct bullish signal.

Santiment itself points out that loud crash predictions have produced mixed results this fall.

The previous visible spike happened around September 14, when “Black Monday” mentions reached 18. Bitcoin then fell roughly 3% the following day.

This time, however, social activity is dramatically larger. The October 18 total of 176 is nearly ten times that September spike and roughly 88 times the recent daily average cited by Santiment.

Yet Bitcoin actually closed higher.

That divergence is the more interesting part of the data.

If widespread fear is already reflected in trader positioning and expectations, a relatively stable Monday could force some bearish traders to reconsider. But if stocks open under heavy pressure and Bitcoin loses its recent support, the social-media concern could prove justified.

For now, Santiment’s chart tells us more about psychology than direction.

“Black Monday” fear has reached an extreme. Bitcoin, so far, has not.
