Protocol Flaw Forces Permanent Chain Shutdown

@bouncebit is permanently shutting down its Layer 1 blockchain after an attacker exploited an authorization vulnerability baked into the network's protocol layer. The attacker exploited a vulnerability in the authorization mechanism of the Evmos-based BounceBit Chain, using it to transfer 286.5 million $BB tokens without authorization from nine accounts on the mainnet. Block production halted on August 20.

The stolen tokens were worth roughly $3.3 million at the time of the attack. While the dollar figure is relatively modest by crypto-exploit standards, the nature of the breach left little room for recovery. The attacker's success came from exploiting a flaw baked into the protocol itself, not a surface-level bug that could be quietly patched. A protocol-level vulnerability sits at the foundation of how the network validates and moves value, meaning a fix would likely require rebuilding trust in the chain's core mechanics rather than issuing a routine software update. Rather than attempt that, BounceBit decided that BounceBit Chain would not be reactivated and the network would be permanently shut down.

BB Token to Relaunch on BNB Chain

The $BB token will be reissued on @BNBCHAIN under the BEP-20 standard, based on a network snapshot taken before the attack. The 286.5 million BB transferred by the attacker will not be carried over to the new contract and will not be valid in the reissued token offering.

BounceBit stated that no private keys or user wallets were compromised during the incident. The company also reported that its CeDeFi, Prime, and real-world asset-focused RWA products were unaffected by the security incident.

Choosing an established network like BNB Chain for the migration gives BounceBit access to infrastructure, liquidity, and security assumptions it does not have to build or maintain itself. The move adds to a growing pattern in crypto: when a blockchain's core protocol fails, migrating to a more established chain is increasingly treated as a viable path forward rather than a last resort. Whether that approach restores confidence among BB holders will likely become clearer once the reissuance is complete.
