BTQ Technologies has completed the first milestone in a multi-year effort to build chips that can protect data against future quantum computers, the company said on August 7.
BTQ Technologies (Nasdaq: BTQ) is a company developing security technology for what it calls the quantum era. Its partner, the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), is a Taiwan-based research organization founded in 1973 that helped spin out major chipmakers including TSMC and UMC.
The two are working to validate BTQ's Quantum Compute-in-Memory (QCIM) architecture, part of a broader chip roadmap BTQ leads alongside South Korea's ICTK.

What the milestone showed
The concern driving the work is that powerful quantum computers could one day break the encryption that secures today's digital systems.
QCIM is BTQ's design for a compact, low-power component that speeds up cryptography, including newer "post-quantum" methods built to withstand that threat.
In this first phase, BTQ said the QCIM core was validated within a TSMC 28-nanometre design environment and shown to accelerate operations tied to FIPS 203, 204 and 205, the post-quantum encryption standards set by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology.

The company said the results confirmed the design's functional correctness and its ability to switch between multiple algorithms.
"This milestone is an important technical and commercial step," said Olivier Roussy Newton, CEO and chairman of BTQ, adding that organizations will increasingly need hardware that delivers stronger protection without heavy performance or power costs.
Where the program goes next
The collaboration now moves into module-level integration and verification. Dr. Chih-Cheng Lu, a manager at ITRI's electronic systems research labs, said the next phase would build on these results toward broader system implementation.
BTQ frames the milestone as a step from design toward commercial evaluation, noting that independent validation reduces technical risk ahead of customer demonstrations.
Backed by ICTK's chip capabilities and ITRI's validation, the company said it expects to ship test chips to key customers and strategic partners by year-end.
