Super validators, the top operators of @CantonNetwork, have approved a proposal that changes how every transaction server on the network pays for its traffic. The measure, CIP-0129, was put forward by Shaul Kfir of Digital Asset and Yiannis Varelas of Five North. Under it, every live synchronizer, the servers that order and confirm transactions, will pay for traffic by burning Canton Coin ($CC) at $60 per MB.
What changes for synchronizers
Until now, only the shared Global Synchronizer burned coins. Privately run synchronizers paid Digital Asset directly. The draft proposal describes the existing split as a network that is technically one but economically two. It says traffic on dedicated synchronizers has historically run under commercial software licenses, with payments going to Digital Asset, and that those fees will be phased out as Digital Asset open-sources the core network (see the CIP draft in the sources below).
Under the new model, anyone will be able to run a synchronizer without permission, and apps and validators operating on them will earn rewards too. The switch is estimated for Q1 2027, with volume discounts to follow around Q3 2027.
How the burn works
The Canton Network documentation says fees are denominated in USD but paid by burning Canton Coin when users purchase synchronizer traffic, and that the burned coins are permanently removed from circulation. In return, validators, super validators and application providers mint new coins for their contributions, a design the docs call a burn-mint equilibrium.
The $60 per MB figure matches the traffic price already used on the Global Synchronizer, as described by the Canton ecosystem publication CantonNews. Extending that price to all production synchronizers means traffic that was previously paid for through license fees will now feed into the same burn and reward system as the Global Synchronizer.
For $CC holders, the practical effect depends on how much traffic moves to dedicated synchronizers and how that activity is priced once volume discounts arrive. Those details have not yet been set out in the approved timeline.
