Cardano Reaches All-Time High on Key Decentralization Metric
Cardano has hit a new milestone. According to data from Chainspect, a blockchain analytics platform, Cardano's Nakamoto Coefficient has climbed to 16, the highest level ever recorded for the network. The development was flagged by Rick McCraken, a Cardano stake pool operator, and points to a meaningful shift in how broadly control is distributed across the blockchain.
The Nakamoto Coefficient is one of the most widely cited tools for gauging how decentralized a blockchain actually is. It represents the minimum number of independent validators or miners that would need to collude to compromise a blockchain network. For a proof-of-stake network like Cardano, the coefficient measures how many validators collectively control at least 33% of the total stake or voting power.
The move to 16 suggests the network is less exposed to a small group of large actors than at any previous point in its history. In practical terms, any attempt to disrupt block production or censor transactions on Cardano would now require coordination among at least 16 independent entities.
What It Means for the Network
Because Cardano uses delegated proof of stake, large stake pools can carry disproportionate influence if delegation is clustered, making changes in the coefficient a useful resilience gauge. A higher reading signals that the network is more resistant to coordinated attacks, a quality that matters both to developers building on the platform and to institutional participants assessing its long-term viability.
The decentralization milestone arrives alongside a firmer period for $ADA. ADA touched $0.199 on Aug. 4, its highest level in about a month, after last trading above $0.19 on July 4. Whales accumulated more than 240 million ADA in less than a week during the rebound.
Cardano's broader momentum is also supported by ongoing ecosystem activity, including work on the Leios testnet, improvements in Hydra scaling, Mithril protocol upgrades, Pyth network integration, and new funding rounds through Project Catalyst, Cardano's decentralized innovation fund.
