The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (@CFTC) will host a public roundtable on Dec. 15 to discuss whether American derivatives markets can move to round-the-clock trading, a model long established in crypto markets.

The agency said the session will address issues related to the viability of derivatives markets moving to 24/7 trading. It will take place at the CFTC's headquarters in Washington, open to the public and livestreamed on CFTC.gov.

What the Roundtable Will Cover

The agenda includes overnight trading, tokenization, infrastructure and staffing needs, and operational readiness.Participants from across the industry are expected to discuss how the Commission can promote responsible innovation while protecting market participants and preserving the integrity and resilience of US derivatives markets. Details on the agenda and speakers have not yet been published.

Chairman Mike Selig (@ChairmanSelig) said in the announcement that the CFTC will not take a one-size-fits-all approach to 24/7 trading, and that the roundtable is meant to hear directly from industry on 24/7 trading across different asset classes.

Building on the Summer Request for Comment

The dialogue builds on the CFTC's request for comment earlier this summer on 24/7 trading. That request, issued in June, sought input on extending standard futures contracts to 24/7 trading and on the potential listing of perpetual contracts that reference physically delivered or storable energy commodities, such as crude oil.The comment deadline was later extended by 30 days to August 26, 2026.

The request also probed the plumbing that continuous trading would require. According to TradeInformer, the Commission wanted input on how exchanges would handle margin calls and settlement when Fedwire and CHIPS are closed, and asked specifically about stablecoins, tokenized Treasury securities and real-time payment infrastructure as possible solutions.

Perpetual contracts, which originated in crypto trading, are a recurring theme. They have no fixed expiry and use periodic funding payments to keep prices aligned with spot. The agency framed the earlier request as a regulatory review, not a product launch. The same applies to the roundtable, which is a discussion forum and does not itself change any rules.

For crypto markets, which already trade continuously through assets such as $BTC and $ETH, the outcome could shape how regulated US venues compete with offshore and on-chain platforms offering perpetual products.
