Summary
- Hoskinson expects Midnight to surpass Zcash through selective disclosure, private AI agents, cross-chain finance, and connections to Cardano’s infrastructure.
- VIA Labs connected Midnight with more than 130 networks, expanding potential access to privacy applications operating across different blockchains.
- Hoskinson also highlighted advances in mathematical AI, while Midnight’s adoption across connected networks remains a test of his broader prediction.
Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson believes Midnight will surpass Zcash by bringing privacy tools to applications across major blockchain networks. His prediction centers on selective disclosure, private AI agents, cross-chain finance, and technology connected to Cardano.
According to Hoskinson’s post, Midnight could combine those capabilities with zero-knowledge proofs, trusted execution environments, and multiparty computation. He also pointed to Cardano’s operating record and its planned Leios upgrade as advantages for the project.
Hoskinson did not explain whether “bigger” refers to market value, network usage, or the number of applications. Although he mentioned 2027, he gave no specific date or measure for testing his prediction.
Midnight’s approach extends beyond serving users on its own network. Hoskinson envisions a decentralized finance system that developers could use across major chains.
The project operates as a specialized layer-one partner chain alongside Cardano, while maintaining its own ledger and processing transactions independently. That structure lets Midnight pursue its own applications while retaining ties to Cardano’s wider ecosystem.

Cross-Chain Privacy Sits at the Center of Hoskinson’s Forecast
Selective disclosure allows users to share particular information without revealing everything they do on a blockchain. For example, an application could verify a required detail while keeping unrelated transaction data private.
Moreover, Midnight has begun building the cross-chain connections that Hoskinson described. In August, VIA Labs introduced messaging links between Midnight and more than 130 public and private networks.
Those links could help applications transfer assets and exchange information across separate blockchains. However, their availability does not show how many developers or users will adopt Midnight’s privacy tools.
Midnight launched its mainnet in March, giving developers a live network on which to build. Its longer-term position will depend partly on whether applications make practical use of selective disclosure and cross-chain access.
Hoskinson Sees AI Taking on More Complex Research
Hoskinson’s reference to private agents comes alongside his broader interest in artificial intelligence. During a separate YouTube broadcast, he described AI’s progress in mathematics as greater than he had expected.
According to Hoskinson, researchers initially expected formal systems to help mathematicians check proofs and work together on difficult problems. He now believes large language models could potentially write sophisticated proofs and formally verify them.
His comments did not establish when private agents might become widely used on Midnight. They do, however, explain why he included AI among the capabilities behind his prediction.
Hoskinson has also described Midnight’s economic approach as cooperation with other networks, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana. For now, application growth and usage across those networks will provide a clearer test of his comparison with Zcash.
