Citigroup has expanded its payments partnership with Coinbase, one of the leading cryptocurrency exchanges, by introducing new infrastructure to simplify stablecoin transactions for corporate clients. On September 28, Coinbase selected Citi’s Virtual Account Wallet to facilitate the automatic conversion of incoming fiat currency into stablecoins. Through this collaboration, Citi’s institutional clients will also gain the ability to accept stablecoin payments via Coinbase’s platform.

Stablecoins Reach Hundreds of Billions

The timing of Citi’s initiative reflects the rapid growth of the stablecoin market. CoinDesk Research reported that the total capitalization of stablecoins reached approximately $311 billion in August, placing blockchain-based dollars into a prominent position in global finance.

Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies designed to maintain a fixed value, often pegged to the US dollar or another fiat currency. Their stability has made them increasingly attractive to financial institutions seeking fast, reliable settlement and cross-border transactions.

Citi Integrates Blockchain With Traditional Banking

Citi’s new solution is designed to bridge the gap between traditional corporate bank accounts and blockchain-based money. By using Citi-powered accounts, companies can receive fiat payments and seamlessly convert them into stablecoins, eliminating the need to manage separate banking and crypto infrastructures.

This integration supports a wider industry trend in which major financial institutions view stablecoins as tools for real-time settlement, efficient cross-border transfers, and the enablement of tokenized financial markets. These uses move stablecoins beyond solely crypto-native products and towards mainstream adoption in the financial sector.

Major banks including Citi are adopting stablecoin infrastructures to streamline cross-border and 24/7 settlement processes, marking a shift in how traditional finance leverages blockchain technology.

Ripple Aligns With Institutional Shift

Ripple, a technology company known for developing the XRP Ledger and cross-border payment solutions, has also pivoted toward broader institutional offerings. In recent years, Ripple has expanded its business beyond XRP-based remittances, focusing on RLUSD (a stablecoin), custody solutions, treasury services, and other products targeted at financial institutions.

Recent reports by Coinpaper highlighted the growing reach of RLUSD, FXRP, and lending services on the XRP Ledger, noting that RLUSD neared $2.4 billion in circulation earlier in the month. This expansion positions Ripple as a comprehensive institutional financial platform rather than solely a payments company.

Ripple’s evolving product range now includes services such as custody, stablecoin solutions, treasury management, and prime brokerage, demonstrating its shift towards servicing the broader needs of banks and financial institutions using blockchain technology.

Mini dictionary: RLUSD, FXRP – RLUSD is a USD-backed stablecoin issued on the XRP Ledger, while FXRP is a synthetic asset representing XRP on other blockchains, facilitating interoperability for decentralized finance applications.

The alignment between traditional banking giants like Citi and blockchain-focused firms such as Ripple suggests growing competition as well as mutual validation of stablecoin infrastructure in institutional finance.
