Key Insights:

  • Brian Armstrong said the CLARITY Act could protect consumers and benefit banks, law enforcement, crypto companies, and Americans.
  • Stuart Alderoty linked the CLARITY Act to jobs and economic growth, citing the crypto industry’s 232,000 supported jobs.
  • Rob Cunningham argued that financial infrastructure is advancing toward DLT even without a final crypto bill.

The CLARITY Act has gained fresh backing from Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong. He said the crypto bill could protect consumers and benefit banks, law enforcement, and crypto companies. Ripple executive Stuart Alderoty also linked the legislation to jobs and economic growth as debate over US crypto rules continues.

Brian Armstrong Highlights the CLARITY Act Benefits

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has called for the CLARITY Act to be passed. He said the legislation could address concerns among millions of Americans who felt left out by the previous administration’s approach to crypto.

Armstrong said the President had recognized that many Americans felt disenfranchised by what he described as an attack on crypto under the prior administration. He argued that the next step should be getting the CLARITY Act through the final stage of the legislative process.

According to Armstrong, the crypto bill could offer benefits to several parts of the economy rather than serving only the crypto industry. He pointed to banks, law enforcement, crypto companies, and consumers as groups that could benefit from the legislation.

For Coinbase, which Armstrong leads, clearer rules around the crypto industry could also provide a more defined environment for companies operating in the sector. However, Armstrong focused his comments on the wider impact of the legislation, especially consumer protection.

His comments came as Washington continued to debate the future of crypto regulation and whether the CLARITY Act would move forward.

The support for the CLARITY Act has also come from Ripple executive Stuart Alderoty, who linked the legislation to employment and economic growth.

The National Cryptocurrency Association said the crypto industry currently supports 232,000 American jobs. Of that figure, 34,000 jobs are directly linked to crypto companies. Meanwhile, another 75,000 jobs are connected to suppliers and contractors that serve those businesses.

The association said the remaining 123,000 jobs are supported by spending from people across that chain. This includes spending at grocery stores, clinics, restaurants, and other parts of the economy.

It also said the industry adds $55 billion to the United States economy and $31 billion in worker income. Alderoty responded to the figures by saying that a vote for the CLARITY Act was a vote for jobs and economic growth. His comment added an economic argument to the wider discussion around the crypto bill.

The figures shared by the National Cryptocurrency Association suggest that the debate is not limited to digital assets themselves. It also covers businesses, workers, and broader economic activity associated with the sector.

Wider Debate Around the Crypto Bill

The discussion around the CLARITY Act has extended beyond jobs and consumer protection. Rob Cunningham argued that financial infrastructure is already moving toward distributed ledger technology even as lawmakers debate the legislation.

Cunningham pointed to the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation moving regulated financial infrastructure worth $114 trillion toward DLT. He also noted that the SEC has provided pathways while existing laws continue to cover areas such as ownership, securities, custody, contracts, and investor rights.

Based on those developments, Cunningham raised the possibility of what he called “CLARITY equivalence.” His argument was that existing laws, regulatory authority, institutional governance, contractual protections, and technology could allow parts of the financial system to move forward even if the Senate fails to pass the legislation.

He said failure to pass the CLARITY Act could slow the transformation and affect American competitiveness, but questioned whether it would be enough to stop the broader shift.

The debate, therefore, remains focused on what the crypto bill would change and how much of the industry can continue developing under existing rules. For Coinbase, Ripple, and other companies in the sector, the outcome could shape how the United States approaches crypto regulation and financial infrastructure.
