TL;DR

  • Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong says quantum computing is not an immediate threat to Bitcoin but preparation must begin now.
  • Coinbase has created an Independent Advisory Board on Quantum Computing and Blockchain to guide its security strategy.
  • The exchange is developing PQ-CoreKMS, a post-quantum version of its key management platform.
  • Consortium members have committed $15 million over three years to support Bitcoin security research and post-quantum migration efforts.

Coinbase is accelerating its efforts to safeguard Bitcoin against future advances in quantum computing, with CEO Brian Armstrong emphasizing that preparation should begin long before the technology poses a real threat.

In a post on X, Armstrong said quantum computing is not an immediate risk to Bitcoin, but stressed that Coinbase and the broader crypto industry are taking proactive steps to ensure digital assets remain secure once sufficiently powerful quantum computers emerge.

“While quantum computing isn’t an immediate threat to Bitcoin, we’re making sure Coinbase and the broader ecosystem are prepared well before a sufficiently powerful quantum computer arrives.”

This comes as major Bitcoin players continue to push more security measures into the quantum computing space.

Coinbase Builds Long-Term Quantum Defense

The comments come as Coinbase unveiled a comprehensive roadmap aimed at strengthening Bitcoin’s long-term security against quantum attacks.

Earlier this year, the exchange established an Independent Advisory Board on Quantum Computing and Blockchain to assess realistic risks and recommend practical solutions. The board concluded that existing cryptographic standards will eventually need to be replaced, with the migration process, not the cryptography itself, likely to be the biggest challenge because of the coordination required across millions of users and decentralized networks.

Coinbase also revealed that roughly 99.9% of customer assets held in custody are currently protected by its CoreKMS key management system, while work is already underway on PQ-CoreKMS, a post-quantum version designed to support future cryptographic standards.

To strengthen industry-wide preparedness, Coinbase has joined forces with several leading financial and crypto firms to launch the Bitcoin Security Consortium.

The initiative includes BlackRock, Fidelity Digital Assets, Strategy, Block, Blockstream, Galaxy, Anchorage Digital, and ARK Invest. Together, the members have pledged $15 million over the next three years to support developers, researchers, and organizations working on Bitcoin security and post-quantum migration technologies.

The consortium will fund research and engineering efforts while allowing Bitcoin Core developers to retain full control over protocol decisions.

Coinbase is Preparing Before the Threat Arrives

Although experts agree that today’s quantum computers are not yet capable of breaking Bitcoin’s encryption, many believe planning must begin years in advance due to the scale of the required infrastructure upgrades.

Coinbase plans to introduce a post-quantum signing pipeline over the coming year and will continue evaluating how future cryptographic changes could affect both Bitcoin custody services and Base, its Ethereum Layer-2 network.

The exchange is also expected to host technical workshops with researchers and Bitcoin Core developers to accelerate discussions around practical migration strategies.

As research into quantum computing continues to advance, Coinbase’s latest initiative reflects a growing consensus across the digital asset industry that preparing early is essential to preserving Bitcoin’s long-term security.
