CZ Points to Ecosystem Depth as Binance's Defining Edge
Changpeng Zhao (@cz_binance), the founder of Binance, has drawn a clear line between exchanges that list tokens and those that build lasting ecosystems around them. Speaking publicly, CZ argued that while replicating a token launch is straightforward, constructing a genuine, coin-centric platform is a far harder task. "Launching tokens is easy, but building an ecosystem in the long term is tough," he said.
The remarks speak directly to Binance's sustained dominance in the exchange market. At the centre of that dominance is $BNB, the platform's native token, which has been embedded across virtually every layer of the Binance product suite since launch. Rather than serving as a simple exchange token, $BNB has evolved into a core utility asset that powers one of the most active blockchain ecosystems, used widely for staking, yield farming, token launches, and fee discounts.
$BNB as Infrastructure, Not Just a Token
The depth of $BNB's integration is what CZ appears to be pointing to when distinguishing Binance from its rivals. $BNB's primary use cases, including trading fee discounts and gas payments on the BNB Chain, continue to anchor its demand, with Binance offering up to 25% off trading fees for spot and margin trading. Beyond discounts, holders gain access to exclusive project launches, token airdrops, and passive income opportunities. Binance's Launchpool stands out as a low-risk mechanism for earning new crypto assets, with 21 Launchpool events in 2024 distributing over $1.75 billion in tokens.
$BNB is the native digital asset of BNB Chain, a blockchain ecosystem with a wide range of use cases, serving as a utility token across BNB Smart Chain, BNB Greenfield, and opBNB. That breadth of integration, built incrementally over years, is precisely what CZ argues competitors have found difficult to recreate.
The point is not merely about market share. It reflects a philosophy that a native token should be woven into fees, staking, on-chain activity, and community incentives rather than bolted on as an afterthought. Exchanges that have tried to replicate the model have generally struggled to achieve the same depth of alignment between their token and their core business. For Binance, keeping $BNB at the front of its homepage and at the heart of its product decisions has been a deliberate, long-term strategy rather than a marketing exercise.
CZ, who stepped back from his CEO role in 2023, still finds ways to influence the BNB ecosystem without holding an official position, with his comments often drawing attention to developments on BNB Chain.
