Crypto analyst Dark Defender (@DefendDark) has identified a structural distinction that separates XRP from every other instrument Ripple Prime accepts as collateral.

Ripple Prime takes XRP, U.S. Treasuries, gold, and stablecoins including RLUSD, with RLEUR, RLJPY, and RLGBP on the way. The list looks like a diversified set of collateral options but Dark Defender argues it is not.

Every stablecoin on that list is a liability. Each one represents a claim on reserves held elsewhere. XRP carries no such dependency. Dark Defender stated: “XRP is the only Asset in that lineup.”

XRP Holds Value Where Stablecoins Cannot

With the debate about RLUSD replacing XRP heating up, it is important to clarify this structural distinction. Stablecoins serve as the cash leg of transactions. XRP serves as the collateral leg. These roles carry different risk profiles. A stablecoin is only as sound as the institution maintaining its reserve. XRP has no equivalent counterparty exposure.

Dark Defender summarized the separation, writing: “Stablecoins are the cash, and XRP is the collateral leg. Not the same thing. Never were.” For institutions managing counterparty risk, that difference is not trivial.

The Multi-Asset Ledger Supports the Argument

XRP Ledger validator Vet (@Vet_XO) replied with a point about the ledger’s design. He described the XRP Ledger as “the first ever multi asset ledger the crypto world has seen. Long before Ethereum.” His position was that tokenized assets and stablecoins are necessary components of a functioning multi-asset system.

More assets on the ledger strengthen its utility. Fewer assets work against the purpose of building a multi-asset infrastructure in the first place.

Dark Defender agreed with that premise, writing, “Agreed, the assets are the point. My argument is sequencing.” That sequencing is specific. Institutions will not hold tokenized assets or RLUSD on the XRP Ledger until a regulated, federally supervised custodian exists.

Dark Defender pointed out that a bank charter resolves that barrier. Notably, Ripple recently secured full approval for Ripple National Trust Bank. Once proper custody is established, institutional participation in the wider asset ecosystem follows naturally. The demand for more assets on the ledger becomes something institutions can act on rather than observe from the outside.

Custody Determines the Timeline

The exchange between Dark Defender and Vet clarifies the full picture. The XRP Ledger already has multi-asset technical capacity. What determines institutional entry is the regulatory custody layer. Dark Defender’s argument is that XRP’s role as collateral is already defined.
