Democrats have won control of the US House of Representatives, NBC News projected shortly after 04:00 CET on Wednesday, and CNBC and MS NOW made the same call. Estimates of the final size range from at least 225 seats to at least 244, and 218 are needed. Two years of divided government begin on 3 January 2027. For crypto, that means a new chair of the committee that writes market rules, subpoena power over Trump's crypto business and a CLARITY Act that now has very little time left. Bitcoin slipped to about $75,846 as stock futures fell.

Democrats win the House: the key facts

  • Projection: NBC News sees at least 244 seats, CNBC and MS NOW at least 225. The count continues.
  • Senate: still open at 46 to 38, including seats not up for election. Democrats have flipped North Carolina and South Carolina and need a net gain of two more.
  • Crypto law: the CLARITY Act failed 49 to 50 in September and expires on 3 January without Senate action.
  • Committee: Maxine Waters is in line to chair House Financial Services.
  • Bitcoin: $75,846, −2.6 % since 00:35 CET.

Democrats win the House: what the result says

The majority was the expected part: Democrats needed a net gain of only three seats, and prediction markets had priced it above 90 percent for days. The size is the news. At least 225 seats would be a working majority, and 244 would be a wave. House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries is now on course to become the first Black Speaker, MS NOW notes; the vote takes place when the new Congress meets in January.

What changes first is control. With the committees, Democrats can hold hearings, issue subpoenas and block Republican bills, and they gain leverage in budget talks. Trump keeps his executive powers, but new laws become much harder. Our midterm election results live tracker follows every remaining race.

What a Democratic House means for crypto regulation

The most direct effect is at House Financial Services. Maxine Waters, the top Democrat there and a sharp critic of the crypto business around the Trump family, would be in line to chair the committee. TD Cowen's Washington analyst Jaret Seiberg expects investigations into Trump and his crypto ties under Democratic control.

For the CLARITY Act, the calendar is now the problem. The House passed it in July 2025 by 294 to 134, with many Democrats. In the Senate it failed on 15 September by 49 to 50, and all 49 yes votes came from Republicans, The Defiant reports. If the Senate does not act by 3 January, the bill expires and any new version has to pass a Waters-led committee. Senator Angela Alsobrooks, one of the negotiators, still considers a deal possible before then. Details are in CLARITY Act explained.

Not everything depends on Congress. Stablecoins stay regulated under the GENIUS Act, and the SEC and CFTC can keep writing rules. So the US does not lose its crypto path tonight, it moves from legislation to agencies, where the Senate's decision on nominees becomes the next deciding factor.

How Bitcoin and the markets reacted to the House result

Market 00:35 CET After the House call Change Bitcoin $77,877 $75,846 −2.6 % S&P 500 future 7,624.50 7,500.75 −1.6 % Oil (Brent) $104.33 $102.84 −1.4 % Gold $3,941.5 $3,944.3 +0.1 %

S&P 500 futures fell about 1.1 percent and Nasdaq 100 futures about 2 percent during the evening, CNBC reports, and JPMorgan estimates a blue wave could cost the S&P 500 around 0.5 percent on Wednesday. Bitcoin moved with them. Investors fear tighter rules for data centers and the AI build-out, more than crypto itself.

Line charts for election night: Polymarket odds of a Democratic sweep rise to about 99 percent, while Bitcoin slips below 76,000 dollars Bettors moved hours before the projection. Sources: Polymarket, Yahoo Finance

The chart also shows who knew first: on Polymarket, where about $159 million has been wagered across the three main midterm markets, the odds of a sweep rose from about 75 percent at midnight CET to 99 percent before the House was called. What happens next after the House result

  • Senate: At the last count, Democrats lead in several open races, including Texas, Kansas, Iowa, Michigan and Maine, and Ohio is close. Alaska comes last.
  • Friday, 6 November: US jobs report, the next data point for rates.
  • Until 3 January: lame-duck session, the last window for the CLARITY Act in its current form.
  • January: the new Congress meets and elects a Speaker.

Iran is the other open risk. Trump's pre-election pause has ended, and what that means for oil and gold is in our analysis Trump, Iran and the MOAB. This article is not investment advice.
