NBC News, based on AP data, projects that Democrats have won a majority in the US Senate in the midterm elections of 3 November 2026. A majority takes 51 of 100 seats, because at 50 to 50 Vice President JD Vance casts the deciding vote. At 06:05 CET NBC News showed 52 seats for Democrats and 40 for Republicans, a net change of +6 for Democrats so far. Republicans went in with 53 seats. For crypto, the result means Elizabeth Warren is in line to lead the Senate Banking Committee and that nominees for the SEC and CFTC now need Democratic votes.

Democrats win the Senate: the key facts

  • Seats (06:05 CET): Democrats 52, Republicans 40, with more races still to be called.
  • Flipped so far: Iowa (Turek), Kansas (Hamilton), North Carolina (Cooper), Ohio (Brown), South Carolina (Andrews), Texas (Talarico).
  • Crypto committee: Elizabeth Warren is the Democrat in line to lead Senate Banking.
  • House: NBC News also projects a Democratic majority there, 255 to 180.
  • Bitcoin: $77,268 at 06:05 CET (CoinMarketCap).

Senate results 2026: the seats that decided it

Democrats have flipped 6 Republican-held seats that NBC News has called so far: Iowa (Turek), Kansas (Hamilton), North Carolina (Cooper), Ohio (Brown), South Carolina (Andrews), Texas (Talarico). They needed a net gain of four, and NBC News showed a net change of +6 at 06:05 CET. All calls, state by state, are in our midterm results live ticker.

What the result means for Bitcoin and crypto

The sharpest reading comes from TD Cowen. Its Washington analyst Jaret Seiberg wrote on election day that if Democrats win both chambers, Congress would likely investigate Trump and his crypto ties, "which is why we do not expect the Clarity Act to pass over the next two years", as Bitcoin Magazine reports. The bill failed 49 to 50 in the Senate on 15 September, with no Democrat voting yes, and it needed 60 votes. It expires on 3 January if the Senate does not act.

That leaves two paths. The first is the lame-duck session until 3 January: Senator Angela Alsobrooks, one of the negotiators, still considers a deal possible before the new Congress starts. The second is rulemaking at the SEC and CFTC, which works without Congress as long as the agencies stay staffed. For investors, that means crypto rules in the US are more likely to come from regulators than from a new law. The history and content of the bill are in our CLARITY Act explainer.

How Bitcoin, gold and oil reacted

A Democratic win was close to priced in: Polymarket put a sweep at 100.0 percent at 06:05 CET. The table compares the latest prices with the level at 00:35 CET, shortly after the first polls closed.

History gives no reliable template, because crypto-specific events have weighed more on Bitcoin than the vote in past elections. Five concrete paths for Bitcoin, XRP and Solana are in our midterm scenarios, and the oil and gold side is in our analysis of Trump, Iran and the MOAB.

What happens next

Next on the calendar are the US jobs report on Friday, 6 November, the lame-duck session and, on 3 January 2027, the new Congress. Close races can stay open for days, so the final seat count will move. If you hold coins through a week like this, compare regulated crypto exchanges and crypto brokers first.
