VARA Broker-Dealer License Unlocks Coinbase Spot Integration
@Deribitofficial has obtained a Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA) Broker-Dealer license in Dubai, a regulatory milestone that has directly enabled a new operational partnership with @CoinbaseExchange. Under the arrangement, Deribit now executes all spot trades through Coinbase's institutional order books, giving clients access to tighter spreads and deeper liquidity for $BTC and $ETH, as well as for upcoming tokenized assets.
According to Coinbase's own platform documentation, spot orders are now routed through Coinbase Exchange, connecting Deribit users directly to Coinbase's institutional spot markets. The platform holds VARA licensing for virtual asset exchange services covering spot, derivatives, and broker-dealer activities.
Context: Coinbase Acquisition and Platform Expansion
The integration sits within a broader structural shift at Deribit. Coinbase completed its $2.9 billion acquisition of the exchange in August 2025, making it a wholly owned subsidiary. Deribit continues to operate under its own brand, but the Coinbase ownership has accelerated product and liquidity upgrades across the platform.
Deribit is widely regarded as the leading venue for crypto options. Coinbase has noted that Deribit holds roughly $60 billion in open interest and processed over $1 trillion in trading volume in 2024 alone. The VARA Broker-Dealer license now formalises the regulatory framework underpinning the spot integration and positions the combined platform for further growth, including tokenized asset markets that both firms have signalled as a priority.
The spot routing upgrade is one of several changes rolling out as the Coinbase and Deribit platforms converge. More than 125 new perpetual contracts, including equity and commodity perpetuals, are also being added to Deribit as part of the broader integration.
