Germany's largest lender is moving into regulated crypto custody. Deutsche Bank plans to launch a digital asset custody service for European institutional and corporate clients by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory checks. The announcement, made on September 16, marks one of the most significant steps yet by a globally systemic bank into digital asset infrastructure.
What the Service Covers
The service will initially support Bitcoin ($BTC), Ether ($ETH), and select stablecoins including $USDC, EURC, and EURAU. The bank will manage clients' wallets and private keys, allowing them to hold digital assets and transfer them to third parties without building their own custody infrastructure.
Initial clients will include corporates, asset managers, hedge funds, custodians, brokers, and sovereign institutions from Deutsche Bank's Corporate Bank and Investment Bank businesses. The bank noted that timing, geographic availability, and supported assets could change depending on regulatory requirements, internal approvals, market conditions, and customer demand.
Deutsche Bank co-head of corporate bank Gerald Podobnik framed the move as complementary to traditional finance rather than a break from it. "Digital assets are not a replacement for the traditional financial system but an important complement to it," Podobnik said. "We see them as new rails that coexist with existing market infrastructures. The service will be developed in line with client demand, regulatory requirements and the bank's risk appetite."
Regulatory Path and Broader Context
Deutsche Bank intends to open the service before the end of 2026, with the rollout hinging on a crypto custody licence from BaFin, Germany's financial regulator, which the bank expects to receive in October.Around eight of Europe's twenty largest banks already run live digital asset services, and under MiCA, a single national licence can be passported across the entire European Economic Area.
Deutsche Bank also plans to add tokenized financial instruments to its product roadmap, suggesting the custody offering is intended as a foundation for a broader digital asset strategy rather than a standalone product. Founded in 1870, the bank has been developing its digital asset custody offering for years, and Reuters reported in September 2023 that it had partnered with Taurus to provide custody services for institutional clients' cryptocurrencies.
