Dogecoin Gets 300x Speed Claim as Metallicus Caps Alpha Deposits at 100 DOGE
CryptoCompass editorial visual for defi coverage.

Summary

  • Metallicus claims DogecoinVM processes transactions 300 times faster while preserving Dogecoin Core and supporting existing wallets, addresses, and private keys.
  • Alpha testing limits individual deposits to 100 DOGE while developers publish source code without completing an independent audit of DogecoinVM.
  • Metallicus targets banks, credit unions, and fintech platforms with faster settlements while identifying X payments as a potential future application.

Dogecoin holders can test a payment layer that Metallicus claims delivers 300 times faster transactions, with deposits capped at 100 DOGE. According to Metallicus CEO Marshall Hayner, DogecoinVM runs on Metal Blockchain mainnet without changing Dogecoin Core or introducing another coin.

Hayner, who also serves on the Dogecoin Foundation board, linked the development to Elon Musk’s earlier demands for faster Dogecoin payments. In 2021, Musk urged developers to increase the cryptocurrency’s transaction capacity so it could support payments on a global scale.

Metallicus has pursued that objective through a parallel network rather than changes to Dogecoin’s underlying protocol or existing wallet system. Engineers built DogecoinVM on Metal Blockchain infrastructure, allowing the payment layer to operate alongside the original Dogecoin network.

According to Hayner, the architecture preserves Dogecoin’s original transaction model and supports existing wallets, private keys, and standard D-format addresses. Users therefore retain their existing wallet credentials when accessing the system, according to the company’s description of its compatibility.

Metallicus attributes the speed improvement to Snowman consensus, which powers the additional layer instead of Dogecoin’s mining-based settlement process. Company figures put transaction finalization between 0.15 and 0.25 seconds, supporting Hayner’s claim that the layer accelerates Dogecoin payments.

These figures describe activity within DogecoinVM, while the original Dogecoin network retains its existing protocol and proof-of-work consensus mechanism.

Deposit Limits and Unaudited Code Define DogecoinVM’s Initial Rollout

DogecoinVM uses a bridge mechanism that locks DOGE on the original network before issuing an equivalent balance within the layer. Metallicus describes this balance as backed at a one-to-one ratio, with users able to withdraw their DOGE through the bridge.

The company also claims instant withdrawals, although the launch remains an early testing release with restrictions on how much users deposit. Individual deposits cannot exceed 100 DOGE, and the team advises participants to maintain small balances during the alpha testing phase.

Developers have published the source code on GitHub, but the system has not undergone an independent security audit at this stage. Metallicus is also working toward SOC 2 security standards as part of its plans to serve institutions handling financial transactions.

Hayner identified banks, credit unions, fintech companies, and platforms as potential users of the payment infrastructure beyond its initial testing audience. Additionally, the company has highlighted payment services on X as a possible application for faster Dogecoin settlements through the layer.

That ambition follows Musk’s scalability proposal, but the supplied announcement describes a development goal rather than a confirmed integration with X.

Metallicus has opened mainnet testing with transaction limits while presenting faster settlement and existing wallet compatibility as DogecoinVM’s principal features. Wider institutional applications remain part of the company’s stated plans as the payment layer operates through its initial testing phase.
