A New Layer, Not a New Coin
Fintech firm Metallicus has introduced the alpha version of DogecoinVM, a new payment layer that accelerates Dogecoin ($DOGE) transactions by a factor of 300 on mainnet. Marshall Hayner, CEO of Metallicus and board member of the Dogecoin Foundation, highlighted the breakthrough as a technological answer to a challenge Elon Musk posed to the Dogecoin community in 2021. At the time, Musk argued that Dogecoin needed substantially higher transaction throughput to become practical as a global payment system.
Rather than modifying the Dogecoin Core protocol, Metallicus developed DogecoinVM as an independent parallel layer built using Metal Blockchain infrastructure. Hayner stressed that the system does not introduce a separate cryptocurrency or change Dogecoin Core. DogecoinVM maintains full compatibility with Dogecoin's UTXO model and enables users to continue using their current wallets and private keys.
How It Works and What the Limits Are
DogecoinVM achieves its speed improvements by using the Snowman Proof-of-Stake consensus protocol instead of Dogecoin's energy-intensive Proof-of-Work mechanism. According to Metallicus, transaction finalization can occur in roughly 0.15 to 0.25 seconds, while throughput is no longer constrained by the same strict block-size limitations affecting the base network.
The mechanism works like a two-way bridge: the original DOGE is locked on the main network, while a collateral-backed equivalent is issued inside DogecoinVM at a 1:1 ratio and can be withdrawn instantly. Currently in alpha, deposits are capped at 100 DOGE per transaction and the system has yet to undergo an independent security audit.
Hayner said the broader goal is practical use in fintech, banks, credit unions, and platforms, highlighting the long-term potential of integrating fast cryptocurrency settlements into payment services, including social network X.
