DogeOS opened a public testnet on Sept. 30, giving developers an EVM-compatible place to build applications for Dogecoin, a chain that has gone 12 years without them.
The project settles to Dogecoin (DOGE) as a zero-knowledge rollup, though the Dogecoin software change that would let the base chain verify those proofs directly is still awaiting implementation.
What Went Live
The testnet is for building and testing, not a product launch. Developers already working with Ethereum (ETH) tooling can use it without learning a new stack.
DogeOS has not given a mainnet date, and chief executive Jordan Jefferson said the team is focused on the testnet and will "share the mainnet timeline as we reach the next development milestones," The Block reported.
DogeOS comes from the MyDoge wallet team and raised $6.9 million in a round led by Polychain Capital. "Today marks the beginning of Dogecoin's evolution from asset to ecosystem," Jefferson said.
How The Rollup Is Secured Today
DogeOS is a zero-knowledge rollup that settles to Dogecoin, and the pitch rests on that anchoring. Dogecoin Foundation director Timothy Stebbing named his condition for supporting it.
"L1 ledger purity must stay intact while we introduce utility one layer above, and that is what DogeOS represents to me," he said. "The utility of a smart-contract system, anchored to the simplicity of the Dogecoin network."
Dogecoin cannot verify those proofs today. The change that would let it has been public for more than a year. On July 22, 2025, Jefferson opened a discussion in the Dogecoin Core repository proposing OP_CHECKZKP, an opcode redefining 185, currently OP_NOP10, to allow native on-chain verification of zero-knowledge proofs.

That would let Dogecoin "enable zk-rollups and other Layer-2 protocols that vastly increase throughput without increasing on-chain load," the proposal argues. It remains open, no maintainer has signaled acceptance, and the thread carries pushback on complexity, security and whether the change suits Dogecoin's simplicity.
The upgrade DogeOS has asked for would itself alter the base layer Stebbing describes as needing to stay intact.
Until it exists, the rollup secures itself off-chain. Jefferson has described that setup to The Block as a permissioned sequencer running alongside a validator set and a trusted execution environment.
A Different Reception To 2022
In August 2022, Jens Wiëchers said claims that Dogecoin had launched a Dogechain test network were "false" and that nobody tied to the Foundation was "in any way affiliated with the token." Co-founder Billy Markus turned down a reported $14 million to promote it.
Four years on, a Foundation director is lending his name to a project in the same category.
The Builder Lineup
The release names 11 teams building trading, lending, a collateralized stablecoin, perpetuals and non-liquidatable options, and notes that "availability and features depend on each team's development schedule."
DOGE traded near $0.094 at the end of September, down roughly 60% from a year earlier. Dogecoin has millions of holders and almost no applications, the gap DogeOS is built to fill.
