DogeOS Brings Smart Contracts to Dogecoin
DogeOS has opened its public testnet, marking a significant step in Dogecoin's evolution from a peer-to-peer payments network into a programmable application ecosystem. The launch enables EVM-compatible smart contracts on Dogecoin via a zero-knowledge rollup.
The testnet, named Chikyū, launched on September 30, adding an Ethereum-compatible application layer to Dogecoin. It gives developers an EVM-compatible environment to build and test applications ahead of a future mainnet release, with the network structured as a zero-knowledge rollup that settles its state back to the Dogecoin blockchain, leaving Dogecoin's base layer unchanged.
DogeOS aims to support a range of applications including trading, lending, stablecoins, prediction markets, and gaming, with transaction fees paid in $DOGE.The testnet processes around 300 transactions per second, significantly faster than Dogecoin's Layer 1.
How the Network Works and What Comes Next
DogeOS runs on a zkVM, software that generates cryptographic proofs that transactions are valid.EVM compatibility means developers who already write Ethereum code can bring those skills, and often that code, over to DogeOS.
DogeOS currently secures the network using a trusted execution environment, validators, and a permissioned sequencer. Dogecoin itself does not yet directly verify DogeOS's ZK proofs. To change the bridge's state, a valid proof, signatures from a majority of validators, and the signature of a TEE signer are required, according to CEO Jordan Jefferson.
Backed by Polychain Capital, the project has submitted a Dogecoin Core upgrade proposal for native ZK proof validation. The project previously raised $6.9 million and proposed a Dogecoin Core network upgrade for ZK-proof verification, which remains pending.Changes to a base layer tend to move slowly and carefully, and whether native ZK proof verification makes it into Dogecoin will shape how trustless DogeOS can ultimately become.
Dogecoin Foundation director Timothy Stebbing commented: "L1 ledger purity must stay intact while we introduce utility one layer above, and that is what DogeOS represents to me."
No mainnet launch date has been announced. Jefferson said the team is focused on giving developers time to build and test applications while the network is validated, adding that the mainnet timeline will be shared as the next development milestones are reached.
