DogeOS, an application layer developed for Dogecoin by the creators of the MyDoge wallet, launched its public testnet on Wednesday, providing a new environment for developers to build Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM)-compatible apps powered by DOGE.

Testnet aims to expand Dogecoin’s utility

The newly opened network functions as a zero-knowledge rollup, regularly settling its state to the Dogecoin blockchain. DOGE serves as the native currency for paying transaction fees within the testnet. Since DogeOS offers EVM compatibility, developers familiar with Ethereum and similar blockchains can apply existing tools and codebases, reducing the barriers to entry for porting decentralized applications to Dogecoin.

Jordan Jefferson, DogeOS founder and CEO, commented on the platform’s debut, stating,

“The testnet gives builders a place to turn ideas for Dogecoin into working applications. Today marks the beginning of Dogecoin’s evolution from asset to ecosystem.”

The team revealed a range of early projects building on the testnet. These include Barkswap, which is developing a liquidity engine, Superposition Finance focusing on lending products, Derps for perpetual futures trading, Split Markets on options, and USDoge, a CDP-based stablecoin. Additional initiatives such as launchpads, a prediction market aggregator, and various games are also being prepared, with availability dependent on the specific teams’ release schedules.

Security and architecture

DogeOS’s approach to security currently relies on a combination of zero-knowledge proof validation, support from a majority of DogeOS validators, and authorization from a trusted execution environment signer. The system additionally uses a permissioned sequencer to process transactions, designed to maintain security and order as the testnet develops.

Timothy Stebbing, director of the Dogecoin Foundation, expressed support for the project, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the purity of the Dogecoin base ledger while expanding novel capabilities through this new layer. Stebbing commented,

“L1 ledger purity must stay intact while we introduce utility one layer above, and that is what DogeOS represents to me.”

At present, Dogecoin’s main chain does not verify DogeOS’s zero-knowledge proofs. Instead, the testnet bridge mechanism requires both proof and the necessary validator signatures, along with TEE confirmation.

Mini dictionary: Zero-knowledge rollup, a scaling solution that processes transactions off-chain and posts cryptographic proofs to the underlying blockchain, enabling higher throughput while maintaining security.

Potential upgrades and funding

The method for verifying zero-knowledge proofs could shift if Dogecoin implements OP_CHECKZKP, an opcode proposed in July 2025, which would allow the blockchain to natively validate zero-knowledge proofs. This proposed functionality remains under consideration and has not yet been integrated into Dogecoin’s protocol.

Jefferson said that timing for the mainnet deployment would depend on achieving future development milestones. In May 2025, DogeOS completed a funding round of $6.9 million, led by Polychain Capital, supporting ongoing development efforts.

Market response

As of Thursday morning, DOGE traded close to $0.096, reflecting a 2.6% gain in the past 24 hours, per data from CoinGecko.

DogeOS’s EVM-compatible testnet signals a push to transform Dogecoin from a single-asset blockchain into a broader ecosystem, expanding developer participation and potential applications well beyond its original scope.
