The Dow Jones Industrial Average drew investors attention on Monday, as markets tracked a volatile stretch for equities driven by an AI stock rout and rising geopolitical tensions.

Bitcoin (BTC) drew renewed attention as a potential hedge, with spot ETF inflows holding firm even as traditional indexes faltered.

According to Reuters, Wall Street extended its decline Friday as the pullback in AI-linked stocks broadened, capping the index's first losing week in several weeks.

What Rattled The Dow

Two forces collided to put traditional markets on the back foot.

First, AI chip stocks fell sharply through Thursday and Friday last week. Companies tied to the artificial intelligence boom, which had driven much of the market's gains in 2026, gave back a meaningful portion of those gains in a matter of days. The S&P 500 closed slightly lower Monday as it tried to stabilize, rising just 0.4% after the prior week's losses.

Second, US-Iran tensions pushed Brent crude higher. Rising oil prices squeezed sentiment further, particularly for energy-intensive sectors. The Wall Street Journal noted that geopolitical jostling added an unpredictable overlay to an already stressed market environment.

Chip stocks including those in the Nvidia orbit had been among 2026's biggest winners. Their retreat forced fund managers to reassess how much of the year's rally rested on a narrow group of AI-exposed names.

How Crypto Responded

While the Dow Jones Industrial Average faced selling pressure, crypto markets told a different story on Monday.

BlackRock's spot Bitcoin and Ethereum (ETH) ETFs recorded $343.4 million in combined net inflows, recovering from an early-week outflow period. That figure came even as equity markets remained fragile, a contrast that traders noticed.

Bitcoin did not decouple cleanly from equities during the worst of the AI selloff last week. Crypto prices dipped alongside stocks during Friday's broad risk-off session. But the speed of ETF inflow recovery on Monday suggested institutional buyers treated the dip as a buying opportunity rather than an exit signal.

Prediction markets also saw surging activity. Kalshi added three million users during the World Cup period ending Sunday and set platform records for trading volume. That growth points to rising appetite for financial instruments that operate outside traditional equity structures.

The crypto-equity correlation question has no clean answer right now. In short, sharp selloffs, BTC tends to fall with risk assets. Over longer windows, the correlation loosens. This week's pattern fits that history.

AI Selloff Tests Bitcoin ETF Demand

The AI chip selloff that weighed on the Dow this week did not arrive without warning. Earlier this month, several large AI-infrastructure stocks began showing signs of exhaustion after months of price gains fueled by data center spending forecasts.

When Netflix shares fell sharply and SpaceX scrubbed a Starship launch last week, sentiment around high-multiple tech names deteriorated quickly. The broader AI trade, which had carried indexes to record highs through mid-2026, became a source of selling pressure rather than support. Bitcoin ETFs had already demonstrated their pull-through capacity in prior weeks, with institutional demand returning sharply after brief outflow windows.
