Musk Predicts Money’s End
Elon Musk predicted that money could become largely irrelevant by 2036 as artificial intelligence and robots create a world of extraordinary abundance. This Elon Musk 2036 money prediction comes at a time when Bitcoin and the cryptocurrency market is under pressure.
In an interview with The Economist editor-in-chief Zanny Minton Beddoes, Musk argued that people primarily need money to obtain goods and services, including food, housing, transport and entertainment. However, he believes advances in artificial intelligence and robotics could eventually allow society to produce more goods and services than people are able to consume.
According to Musk, this level of abundance could dramatically reduce the importance of traditional money. If robots can produce essential goods cheaply and efficiently, scarcity may become less relevant in large parts of the economy.
Musk Says AI and Robots Could Create Abundance
Musk believes the rapid development of AI and robotics could transform global production over the next decade. Machines may eventually perform most of the work currently carried out by humans while producing food, housing, transport and other services at an unprecedented scale.
Under this scenario, people may no longer need money in the same way they do today. Musk also questioned the purpose of accumulating wealth if AI-powered systems can provide more goods and services than any individual could reasonably consume.
The prediction attracted some attention from Bitcoin supporters because Musk previously described energy as the true foundation of money. Bitcoin mining requires large amounts of computational power and electricity, which led some crypto advocates to view Bitcoin as a monetary system directly connected to energy.
What the Prediction Could Mean for Bitcoin
Musk has argued that governments can create more fiat currency, while energy itself cannot be fabricated. His comments fueled speculation that he sees Bitcoin as a stronger form of money than government-issued currencies, although he has not explicitly endorsed it as the future global currency.
Tesla and SpaceX also reportedly have large Bitcoin holdings. SpaceX holds approximately 18,712 Bitcoin, while Tesla owns around 11,509 Bitcoin. At a Bitcoin price of roughly $65,000, their combined holdings would be worth close to $2 billion.

The Elon Musk 2036 money prediction comes during a difficult period for crypto markets. Bitcoin fell below $65,000 in February and has struggled to establish a sustained recovery. Now, Musk’s vision could have conflicting implications for Bitcoin.
If traditional money becomes less important because goods and services are widely available, demand for all currencies could decline. However, Bitcoin could still keep some of its value as a scarce digital asset, a store of wealth or a way of transferring value outside government-controlled financial systems.
Bitcoin’s fixed supply of 21 million coins could also make it attractive in a world where fiat currencies expand. Supporters may then use the cryptocurrency as a form of digitally stored energy or a hedge against monetary inflation.
Ultimately, Musk’s prediction is still highly speculative. Achieving a world of abundance by 2036 would require enormous advances in robotics, AI infrastructure, energy generation and manufacturing.
