Key takeaways

  • Tesla stock moved lower despite strong excitement around Elon Musk’s long-awaited Roadster reveal
  • The new Roadster showcased interesting features, including SpaceX-developed thrusters, sub-one-second acceleration claims and a 2028 production target
  • Tesla’s upcoming earnings are likely to matter more for TSLA’s next move

Elon Musk unveiled the long-delayed next-generation Roadster, complete with SpaceX-developed thrusters capable of sending the electric sports car into the air.

Tesla revealed the redesigned Roadster at an event in McGregor, Texas, on Thursday, almost nine years after the next-generation vehicle was first shown. The demonstration included jumps and mid-air maneuvers powered by built-in thrusters, while Musk said production is now expected to begin in 2028.

The event immediately generated attention around Tesla and Musk, but it also renewed questions about whether spectacular product demonstrations can translate into stronger performance for Tesla stock.

Tesla Roadster Steals the Spotlight

Tesla says the new Roadster will be capable of accelerating from zero to 60 mph in less than one second and reaching speeds above 230 mph. The company showed several versions of the vehicle, including Performance, Thrust and an invite-only Rocket edition.

However, the new production target means customers will have waited roughly a decade since Tesla originally unveiled the next-generation Roadster.

Musk also acknowledged that the Roadster is unlikely to have a major financial impact on Tesla. Instead, the vehicle is designed primarily as a showcase for the company's engineering capabilities at a time when Tesla is trying to position itself around artificial intelligence, autonomous driving and robotics.

Tesla Stock Faces a Bigger Test

The Roadster reveal comes at an important moment for TSLA investors. Tesla shares have struggled to build sustained momentum despite excitement around products like robotaxis, Optimus and the Roadster.

The company is also operating against a volatile market backdrop, with technology and AI-linked stocks recently coming under pressure as investors question high valuations and rising capital costs.

Attention is now shifting toward Tesla's upcoming quarterly earnings, where investors will be watching margins, revenue growth, spending and updates on the company's AI and autonomous-driving ambitions.

That means the Roadster may generate headlines, but Tesla's financial performance could ultimately determine the stock's next major move.
