Ethena’s USDe stablecoin briefly dropped 8% to $0.9202 against Tether’s USDT on Binance’s spot market early Tuesday before rebounding almost immediately to $0.9996. The drop triggered concerns that mirrored an incident in October 2025, when the synthetic dollar temporarily lost its dollar peg on the same exchange.
Short-lived price drop hits Binance
The temporary depeg occurred in the early hours, with analysts recording the USDE/USDT pair sliding between 05:00 UTC and 05:04 UTC. While the move was noticeable on Binance’s order book, USDe prices did not experience abnormal fluctuations on-chain or in deeper liquidity venues.
Within minutes, the stablecoin’s value returned to near its $1 target. The quick recovery suggested that the issue was isolated to one trading venue and did not indicate deeper systemic risks.
USDe is a synthetic dollar stablecoin developed by Ethena, a blockchain protocol designed to offer a dollar-pegged asset backed by crypto collateral and short futures positions, rather than cash reserves. This model sets it apart from stablecoins like USDT and USDC, which maintain their pegs through traditional fiat reserves.
Mini dictionary: Ethena is a decentralized finance (DeFi) protocol known for its USDe stablecoin, which uses crypto-backed hedging strategies rather than fiat reserves for price stability.
Liquidity squeeze behind the move
The sudden price dip aligned closely with Binance’s scheduled infrastructure wallet upgrade, which led the exchange to suspend deposits and withdrawals across all networks at 6 a.m. UTC for about an hour. Despite the timing, there is no evidence linking the depeg to this maintenance.
Market participant Punk (@punk2898) reported that a market sell order of approximately $8 million in USDe hit Binance’s thin order book, triggering the sharp drop in price. Punk estimated that the other side of the trade made about $600,000 within three minutes and suggested that Binance should warn users before such sizable orders are executed.
Another trader known as CM (@chenmo) supported this assessment, stating that the thin liquidity on the USDe pair was a primary factor spreading risk during past incidents. Both traders indicated that order book depth on Binance was insufficient to absorb the large sell order without a significant price reaction.
October 2025 incident revisited
The latest events recalled the October 2025 scenario, when USDe slumped as low as $0.65 on Binance during a widespread market liquidation. During that episode, more than $19 billion in trading positions were wiped out in a single day, affecting 1.6 million traders.
Binance later attributed part of the chaos to a display glitch that momentarily showed token prices at zero. The company paid out about $283 million in user compensation in the aftermath.
Guy Young, CEO of Ethena Labs, commented during the 2025 event that describing the episode as a genuine USDe depeg was misleading, arguing that only Binance’s price deviated sharply while liquidity pools elsewhere remained stable.
Following the October 2025 incident, Binance updated its processes to incorporate the actual asset redemption price into its reference index and established a soft price floor for USDe, moves designed to prevent similar disruptions in the future.
With USDe’s utility having expanded beyond decentralized finance, disruptions now carry broader implications. The token was added to BlackRock’s Aladdin platform in June, joining BTC and ETH as available crypto assets for institutional clients using the portfolio management tool.
