The Ethereum Foundation has moved 566.27 $ETH from its official grants wallet to an anonymous, unlabeled address, drawing attention from on-chain watchers. A separate transfer of 2.62 $ETH was also sent to a legacy wallet previously linked to @Upbit, a South Korean cryptocurrency exchange.

No public statement has accompanied the transactions. The identity of the recipient and the purpose of the grant remain undisclosed, which is not unusual for the foundation's funding model. Ethereum Foundation grants are paid on-chain in ETH by default, meaning recipients receive funds directly to wallet addresses without those addresses necessarily being publicly identified.

A More Targeted Grants Strategy

The transfer reflects a broader shift in how the Ethereum Foundation approaches ecosystem funding. The Ecosystem Support Program (ESP) has supported over 900 projects with more than $148 million in funding across the Ethereum ecosystem. In 2025, the program moved from an open application model to a more proactive, needs-driven structure, organizing funding around publicly articulated wishlists and targeted Requests for Proposals sourced from Ethereum Foundation domain teams.

The Ethereum Foundation describes itself as a resource allocator and ecosystem steward rather than a central authority over the network. The foundation operates through a mix of in-house teams and external grants, supporting protocol research and development, developer tooling, security work, and community initiatives.

Transparency Questions Remain

Transfers to unlabeled addresses from known foundation wallets have previously prompted questions about accountability. These transactions come amid ongoing scrutiny of the Ethereum Foundation's financial activities. The foundation, which supports ecosystem development through grants, has historically faced questions about transparency and fund management.

In June 2025, the foundation introduced a transparent treasury policy, committing to publish quarterly and annual disclosures of its assets, investments, and operational costs. Whether this latest transfer will be reflected in forthcoming disclosures remains to be seen.

The grant is part of a continuing series of strategic distributions the foundation uses to support the next generation of decentralized infrastructure, though the specific project or team behind this particular address has not been made public.
