A wallet linked to the Ethereum Foundation has sold 7,594 ETH, worth about $17.79 million, after a year without activity. On-chain analytics firm Lookonchain flagged the transaction, which involves an early Ethereum (@ethereum) holder with ties to the project's founding era.

What the on-chain data shows

The wallet had been inactive for roughly a year before the sale. Lookonchain said on Oct. 27 that the 7,594 ETH was sold from a wallet tied to an early investor associated with the Ethereum Foundation, though the wallet's exact relationship with the Foundation and the reason for the sale were not confirmed.

The sale was executed at about $2,343 per ETH, roughly 7,500 times the investor's ICO purchase price.

The holder reportedly bought 200,000 ETH during the ICO for just $61,000. The address also received an additional 42,654 ETH directly from the Ethereum Foundation when ETH was trading at $13.82.

Context: the 2014 ICO and a wave of early sellers

The wallet's cost basis traces to Ethereum's 2014 token sale. The ICO began on July 22, 2014, and ran for 42 days until Sept. 2, allowing participants to buy 2,000 ETH for 1 BTC.The project raised $18.3 million through the sale, selling ETH at roughly $0.311 per token. At that price, 200,000 ETH works out to about $62,000, in line with the reported $61,000 cost.

The sale is the latest in a series of moves by early Ethereum holders. Lookonchain noted last Friday that an Ethereum OG sold 3,000 ETH worth over $7.2 million, a return of nearly 130x on a purchase made nine years ago.Earlier this month, another early holder deposited 6,369 ETH worth about $16 million to Kraken, and an ICO participant moved 13,330 ETH to Coinbase.

Price context matters for reading these moves. According to CryptoPotato, ETH rose from under $2,000 to $2,800 in a few months before slipping to $2,300 in the latest market-wide pullback, then recovering to around $2,400.

Large transfers from long-dormant wallets often draw attention because of their potential effect on sentiment, but on-chain data alone does not show why a holder sells. Sales can reflect profit-taking, portfolio rebalancing or other personal reasons. Whether the proceeds will be moved to an exchange, converted or held elsewhere has not been confirmed.
