Ethereum News Today: ETF Inflows Near Bitcoin as Machi Hold $100M Long

Two big signals are shaping Ethereum news today: a surge in institutional demand and one whale's massive bet. ETF flows into Ethereum are accelerating at a pace beginning to rival Bitcoin, even though its overall market size remains a fraction of BTC's.

Meanwhile, a closely watched trader is sitting on a nine-figure long, a position drawing attention as the broader market wobbles. Here's a rundown of the latest developments.

At a Glance

  • Crypto ETF hit a fresh single-day high of roughly $234 million, closing in on Bitcoin's ~$242 million for the same window.

  • Ethereum market cap sits at only about 18.8% of Bitcoin's, yet its ETF inflows reached nearly 96.8% of Bitcoin's total.

  • Trader Huang Licheng ("Machi") holds a 41,000 ETH long worth about $100 million, the largest tracked on-chain position.

  • Machi trimmed part of that position roughly seven hours before the report, locking in a loss near $1.96 million.

  • A separate exploit hit the Avici platform for about $1.02 million, with funds routed through SOL, USDC, and eventually ETH.

Ethereum Price Today

On 29 August 2026 at 9:00 AM UTC, ETH price trades at $2433.35 with a drop of 2.2%, with market capitalization $293.5 billion and 24-Hour trading volume $12.7 billion.

ETF Inflows Surge to $234 Million as Ethereum Closes the Gap

According to commentary from Lebit Mining Pool founder Jiang Zhuoer, Ethereum ETF products just logged a new single-day inflow record of approximately $234 million, just below Bitcoin's roughly $242 million over the same stretch.

What stands out is the gap between the two assets: The market cap is only around 18.8% the size of Bitcoin's, yet its inflows reached nearly 96.8% of what Bitcoin (BTC) pulled in. Capital is flowing into Ethereum at a rate disproportionate to its current size relative to BTC.

Why Strong Inflows Could Fuel the Next Breakout

Jiang Zhuoer's read is that sustained demand has helped stabilize the price structure, which he describes as high-level consolidation punctuated by steadily rising lows. He suggested inflows at this scale could eventually force short sellers to cover, potentially fueling another leg up.

Notably, he says he's staying fully invested in spot holdings rather than adding leveraged exposure, citing personal discipline around avoiding forced liquidations even in a bullish scenario.

Machi Holds $100 Million Long Despite Recent Losses

On-chain analytics firm Lookonchain is tracking a massive long position from trader Huang Licheng, known as Machi. His 41,000 ETH position is valued at roughly $100 million, the single largest visible within Lookonchain's monitoring scope.

As the market pulled back, Machi closed part of the position about seven hours before the report surfaced, realizing a loss of approximately $1.96 million. Despite the drawdown, most of his exposure remains intact.

Timeline: From ETF Inflows to Machi's Latest Move

  • Aug. 28: Jiang Zhuoer reports Ethereum ETF inflows of roughly $234 million.

  • Aug. 28: Bitcoin ETF inflows land near $242 million over the same period.

  • Aug. 28: Analysis highlights ETH inflows reaching 96.8% of Bitcoin's, despite its market cap being just 18.8% of BTC's.

  • Aug. 29: Lookonchain flags Machi's 41,000 ETH long, worth roughly $100 million.

  • ~7 hours prior: Machi partially closes his long, realizing a loss near $1.96 million.

  • Aug. 29: Machi's remaining book keeps exposure to ETH, HYPE, and BTC.

Avici Exploit Adds Fresh Risk

Separately, the Avici platform reported an exploit resulting in losses of about $1.02 million. Trackers say the attacker moved 10,000 SOL to another wallet, converted it into roughly $1.02 million in USDC, then bridged and swapped those funds into approximately 418 ETH before routing them toward a Tornado Cash deposit address.

Avici's team has since stated that affected card balances will be refunded in full, a reminder that security risk persists even during strong inflow periods.

What Traders Should Watch Next

Going forward, traders will likely watch whether Ethereum crypto ETF inflows continue at this pace, whether the "higher lows" pattern holds under pressure, and how whale positioning from traders like Machi evolves. Sustained inflows paired with disciplined spot accumulation, rather than aggressive leverage, could be the combination that keeps the structure intact heading into the next phase.

Conclusion

The latest inflow numbers tell a story of outsized institutional interest in Ethereum relative to its market size, while positions like Machi's $100 million long show conviction even after short-term losses. Add in reminders of ongoing security risk from the Avici exploit, and the picture is one of a market maturing quickly but still carrying real volatility. Conditions can shift fast, so staying updated on both flows and on-chain activity matters.
