Ethereum News Today: $125M Fund, Devnet 8 Launch, ETH Staking Update

Ethereum news today spans four fronts. Glamsterdam is closing in on its next devnet milestone, the Hegotá proposal window has shut with EIPs still under review, Sharplink and Galaxy Digital have launched a $125 million onchain yield fund, and Grayscale has revised its staking ETF filing. Vitalik Buterin also weighed in on digital privacy. Here's what's happening across the network today.

Ethereum Devnet 8 Set for Early August Launch

Core developers confirmed that Glamsterdam-Devnet-7 held up under heavier transaction loads, clearing the way for Devnet-8, which is queued for early August and is expected to be the final devnet before the upgrade moves to public testnets. The build carries a short list of non-negotiable changes, including tweaks tied to EIP-8070.

Once it stabilizes, Glamsterdam will progress toward the Sepolia and Hoodi testnet forks, with mainnet activation still targeted for later this year. The upgrade centers on enshrined proposer-builder separation and block-level access lists, changes developers call the largest structural shift since the Merge.

Hegotá Upgrade Proposal Window Closes With EIPs Still Under Review

The submission deadline for non-headliner Hegotá proposals passed on August 6, with authors required to file pull requests against the upgrade's meta EIP for later review on an All Core Devs call. FOCIL is already confirmed as Hegotá's headliner feature, while native account abstraction was accepted as a non-headliner pending further alignment among client teams.

Separately, EIP-8363, a proposal touching the staking cap, has stirred debate; it had not yet cleared the "Proposed for Inclusion" bar, and even if it advances, any staking-cap change would trigger a lengthy transition period. Hegotá mainnet activation remains well out, with current planning pointing toward 2027.

Sharplink and Galaxy Launch $125M Onchain Yield Fund

Sharplink and Galaxy Digital formally launched the Galaxy Sharplink Onchain Yield Fund on August 7, an institutional vehicle carrying $125 million in committed capital.

Of that, $100 million comes from Sharplink's staked treasury, with Galaxy contributing the remaining $25 million as investment manager, applying the same research and risk framework it uses across its trading and asset management businesses.

Fund Targets DeFi and Onchain Yield Opportunities

The fund will deploy capital into DeFi liquidity protocols and other onchain yield strategies while letting Sharplink preserve its core staked ETH exposure.

Galaxy CEO Mike Novogratz framed the launch as part of a broader shift of institutional capital from passive holding into active onchain participation, while Sharplink leadership described it as a way to compound treasury returns without selling underlying holdings.

The move adds to a growing pattern of corporate ETH treasuries seeking productive use for their holdings.

Grayscale Revises Ethereum Staking Mini ETF Filing

Grayscale is preparing to execute a Third Amended and Restated Trust Agreement for its Ethereum Staking Mini ETF (NYSE Arca: ETH) around August 7, a change aimed at conforming with IRS guidance on staking-related grantor trust status.

The amendment would require the trust to convert staking rewards to cash at least quarterly and distribute net proceeds to shareholders, after sponsor and trust expenses.

The fund already stakes roughly 80.8% of its approximately 839,556 ETH holdings, generating gross staking rewards near 2.78%, or about 2.61% net of fees, atop a 0.15% management fee. The filing signals Grayscale may push its staked share even higher.

Vitalik Buterin Says Long-Term Pseudonymity Is Getting Harder

Vitalik Buterin commented this week on Signal's plan to let users register accounts without a phone number, calling it a welcome step that reduces telecom dependence and lowers exposure to SIM-swap attacks.

But he cautioned that removing phone numbers doesn't solve digital privacy alone. Buterin argued pseudonymity is no longer sufficient in 2026, since AI tools can reconstruct identity from metadata like message timing, contact frequency, and message size, even without a name attached.

Ethereum Privacy Debate Moves Toward Message-by-Message Unlinkability

Buterin pointed to message-by-message unlinkability as a stronger long-term privacy standard than pseudonymity, highlighting mixnets and privacy-focused messaging tools as paths forward.

His comments extend a broader privacy push he's made throughout the year, including earlier proposals around account abstraction and metadata reduction at the protocol layer.

The core concern: confidentiality of message content means little if surrounding metadata still lets AI systems identify who's talking to whom.

Ethereum Price Holds Near $1,915 as Network Developments Accelerate

On 8 August 2026 at 6:38 AM UTC, the Ethereum Price today is near $1,916.22 as of early August 8, with 24-hour trading volume around $3.58 billion and a market capitalization near $231 billion.

The token has held a fairly narrow range as traders weigh Glamsterdam's testnet progress against fresh institutional flows from the Sharplink-Galaxy fund and Grayscale ETF changes. Watch upcoming testnet forks, staking-related distributions, and further Hegotá reviews for near-term catalysts.

Conclusion

Between Glamsterdam's approaching devnet milestone, Hegotá's closed proposal window, a fresh $125 million yield fund, Grayscale's staking ETF overhaul, and Buterin's privacy remarks, Ethereum development and institutional tracks are both advancing quickly, even as price action stays comparatively muted.
