ETH Beats BTC on Price, But Not on Depth

Ether had a stronger third quarter than Bitcoin in 2026, but the rally came with a notable caveat: market liquidity thinned considerably relative to its larger rival.

Ether's price surged 70% in the quarter, outpacing Bitcoin's 42% gain. Yet behind those headline numbers, the picture for $ETH was more complicated. ETH liquidity weakened, with daily median market depth averaging 35 to 45% of Bitcoin's between July 6 and September 30, down from over 60% a year ago. CoinGecko described it as "a stark drop from last year's figures."

Market depth is a standard measure of how easily an asset can be traded without meaningfully moving its price. It captures the total dollar value of buy and sell orders sitting on exchanges within a set distance of the current price. The deeper the market, the more money it takes to move the price. When depth is thin, large orders can push prices around more sharply.

Still Liquid, But the Gap Is Growing

During the quarter, ether maintained a depth of $13 million to $14 million within 0.15% of its market price. That level of depth matters most for everyday trades and for larger orders that need to be filled without triggering significant price moves.

CoinGecko noted that despite the relative decline, $ETH is not in distress. "$ETH remains fairly liquid at this range [within 0.15% of the market price], with most exchanges maintaining over $1 million in depth on each side," CoinGecko said.

By contrast, Bitcoin's order books have grown considerably. Bitcoin's books strengthened to roughly $29 million bid and $37 million ask depth, approximately 50% higher than 2025, while ETH held just $13 to $14 million per exchange.

Ether is not the only major token with thinner markets. Liquidity in Solana's $SOL, ether's main rival, has also shrunk, though CoinGecko measured it over a wider range.Except for BTC, liquidity for the top five major crypto assets is generally lower in 2026 compared to 2025.

The divergence between price performance and liquidity depth is a reminder that a rising token price does not always mean a healthier market structure. For institutional participants moving large sums, a thinner order book can translate into higher execution costs, even when sentiment appears bullish.
