Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake is urging large Bitcoin and Ether holders to start preparing for what he calls "bunker mode," warning that artificial intelligence could, in a worst-case scenario, discover a mathematical shortcut capable of recovering private keys from exposed public keys "in months, not years." No practical attack of that kind has been demonstrated against Bitcoin or Ethereum. Drake's warning is a precaution based on the accelerating ability of AI systems to produce mathematical research, not evidence that either network's wallet cryptography has been broken. Bitcoin was trading near $81,750 late Thursday, down about 2% over 24 hours after falling below $83,000 earlier in the session. The price decline should not be attributed to Drake's warning. Rising oil prices, Treasury yields, ETF outflows and forced liquidations were already weighing on crypto markets. FinanceFeeds reported Wednesday that $487.2 million of leveraged crypto long positions had been liquidated as Bitcoin broke below $84,000, while Thursday's market remained under pressure from the same broader risk-off backdrop.

What Does "Bunker Mode" Actually Mean?

Drake's proposal is relatively simple: large holders should gradually move assets into fresh addresses whose public keys have never been exposed onchain. A cryptocurrency wallet is controlled by a private key. Its corresponding public key allows the network to verify that a transaction was genuinely authorised without revealing the private key itself. Current systems are designed around the assumption that calculating the private key from the public key is computationally impractical. Drake's concern is that advanced AI could discover an unknown mathematical shortcut that changes that assumption. For many Bitcoin address types, the public key can remain hidden behind a hash until coins are spent. Using a fresh address and avoiding address reuse therefore limits what an attacker could theoretically work with. On Ethereum, an externally owned account's public key can effectively be recovered once the account has signed an outgoing transaction. Investor Takeaway: An exposed public key is not the same as a compromised wallet. Drake is arguing that reducing unnecessary exposure provides an additional defensive layer if AI unexpectedly weakens elliptic-curve cryptography. FinanceFeeds examined the existing version of this problem in August in Can Quantum Computers Break Bitcoin? Here's What Experts Say, including how fresh Bitcoin addresses can keep public keys hidden until funds are spent.

Why Did Drake Suddenly Move the Timeline Forward?

Drake's October 7 warning followed OpenAI's release Tuesday of 722 mathematical manuscripts produced by an internal frontier model tested against roughly 4,000 research problems. Some of those results include computer-checkable proofs, while others remain unverified. The release does not demonstrate an attack on cryptocurrency cryptography. Drake nevertheless argues that rapid AI progress in mathematics means developers should consider the possibility that elliptic-curve cryptography could fail through a classical mathematical breakthrough before sufficiently powerful quantum computers arrive. That creates a timing problem for Ethereum. The Ethereum Foundation's protocol team currently targets December 2029 for making Ethereum's execution, consensus and data layers quantum-resistant.

Vitalik Buterin Agrees on the Risk but Says Do Not Rush

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin agreed that AI-accelerated mathematics deserves to be treated seriously but pushed back against hurried wallet migrations. Buterin also warned that the issue may extend beyond today's elliptic-curve signatures. He said AI progress could weaken some lattice-based cryptography that has been considered for post-quantum systems, arguing that hash-based approaches may offer fewer opportunities for unexpected mathematical shortcuts. At the same time, he cautioned users against introducing a more immediate danger by moving funds incorrectly. Buterin said he has personally lost more money through botched migrations than through hacks. The tension is already relevant to Ethereum's development roadmap. FinanceFeeds reported in September that Buterin's EIP-8288 proposal could sharply reduce the cost of quantum-safe signatures, potentially making stronger cryptographic schemes practical without forcing every transaction to carry large proofs directly onchain. Investor Takeaway: The current message is preparation, not panic. No demonstrated AI technique can recover Bitcoin or Ethereum private keys from public keys today, and rushed transfers introduce their own operational risks.

What Can Bitcoin and Ethereum Holders Do Now?

For Bitcoin holders, the lowest-risk precaution is ordinary wallet hygiene: avoid address reuse, use wallets that generate fresh receiving addresses and keep software updated. Large holders who understand their custody setup can consider Drake's suggestion of moving gradually rather
