In a recent analysis, Dr. Dana Love sheds light on the concentration of staked Ethereum (ETH) under a few operators within Lido’s liquid-staking ecosystem. As the preeminent liquid-staking protocol on Ethereum, Lido is subject to growing scrutiny over its control dynamics and governance frameworks, which have implications for decentralized finance.
Who Holds the Keys?
A key observation by Love is the significant amount of ETH—approximately 8 million, valued at $16.5 billion—managed by a mere 34 node operators. Love’s findings suggest a centralized control model rather than an open, decentralized system. The emphasis on the number of validators can hide the central issue of who truly governs the staked ETH.
The number of validators was never a measure of decentralization; what matters is how much of the stake is actually managed by a handful of operators, Love argues.
Curated Module v2: A New Era or More of the Same?
Set to introduce the Curated Module v2, Lido plans to implement a structured bond requirement for its curated operators. Each operator must submit a collateral in ETH that may be forfeited due to validator downtime or mismanagement. Initial requirements demand an 11 ETH bond from the first validator key, lowering for each additional validator managed by the same operator.
In comparison, Lido’s Community Staking Module requires smaller collateral, offering a seemingly more accessible path for new operators. This discrepancy raises questions about the balance of economic efficiency and fairness within the system.
Curated Module v2 demands an 11 ETH collateral from the first validator.
Community Staking Module lowers entry to 2.4 ETH for new validators.
Governance remains by committee, requiring multi-signature approval for decisions.
Lido’s governance challenges are spelled out as stakeholder power does not expand with validator consolidation following updates like the Ethereum Pectra upgrade and EIP-7251. While validators combine their resources, this doesn’t necessarily democratize governance over staked ETH, which remains concentrated.
The onset of Lido’s Curated Module v2 on the Ethereum mainnet is yet to occur, with its smart contracts still under audit. This evolving ecosystem of bond requirements and committee governance continues to stir important debates regarding how decentralized Ethereum staking truly is, and who ultimately benefits from its rewards and risks.
