Ethereum, XRP, and Solana recorded sharper declines than Bitcoin over the past day, with analysts attributing the drop to renewed macroeconomic uncertainty and a shift in trader sentiment across the cryptocurrency market.
Altcoins see steeper declines
The total cryptocurrency market cap fell 2.5% to $2.8 trillion. Ethereum declined 5.5% to a $289 billion market cap, XRP fell 5.1% to $82.4 billion, and Solana dropped 3.8% to $60.6 billion. By comparison, Bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency, declined 3.1% on the day and 2.6% over the week, lowering its market cap to $1.6 trillion.

Market observers linked the sell-off to the latest US consumer price index reading of 3.7% and mounting expectations of an interest rate hike in October, both of which intensified macroeconomic pressures on riskier assets like cryptocurrencies.
Hedging and liquidity shifts
Nick Forster, founder of options trading exchange Derive.xyz, stated that increased volatility prompted traders to move into “protection mode.” He observed that hedging activity on his platform doubled over the past day, while large investors reduced their exposure to optimistic positions established in the spring.
This immediate pull-back from long-term upside bets alongside aggressive short-term hedging shows a dramatic regime shift, with institutional participants rapidly reassessing their macro risk exposure as the path for interest rates turns murky again.
Luke Nolan, senior research associate at CoinShares, explained that altcoins, which are generally considered high beta assets, are more vulnerable to sudden drops in the broader market. He noted that the US dollar’s move to a near 18-month high contributed to downward pressure, as cryptocurrencies often exhibit an inverse correlation to the US Dollar Index (DXY).
Mini dictionary: US Dollar Index (DXY), a measure that tracks the value of the US dollar relative to a basket of foreign currencies. A rising DXY signals a stronger dollar and can mean reduced risk appetite for alternative assets like cryptocurrencies.
Nolan said that tightening financial conditions reduce liquidity and risk appetite, further pressuring altcoins. He indicated that he would watch for any changes in expectations for interest rate hikes before predicting a rebound in prices.
High beta assets just got hit harder, similar to equities, where high-performing stocks have seen outsized drawdowns in recent sessions. Altcoins are typically more sensitive to financial conditions, and tightening affects the premise of liquidity expanding.
Profit-taking follows altcoin rally
Max Shannon, senior associate at Bitwise Europe, said part of the recent sell-off reflects traders taking profits after a strong multi-month rally in altcoin prices. Futures open interest in altcoins excluding Ethereum has dropped by $8 billion since the start of October, indicating that traders have reduced risk after the latest uptrend.
Shannon noted that Ethereum outperformed Bitcoin for three consecutive months, a streak last seen in March 2021, prompting investors to realize profits. Ethereum ETFs witnessed 11 straight trading days of net outflows totaling $782.8 million, followed by a small inflow on Tuesday, with $129.5 million in new outflows since, based on CoinGlass data.
He described the current market environment as a “consolidation period” for altcoins that had previously rallied strongly. Shannon said that while altcoins tend to move in tandem with Bitcoin during difficult periods, they can diverge, particularly when unique catalysts emerge.
Looking ahead, Nolan said a recovery would likely depend on expectations for US interest rate decisions. He added that uncertainties made predicting a clear short-term direction for altcoins challenging, as a further drop in Bitcoin could deepen losses, but a robust move above $80,000 could swiftly reignite altcoin momentum.
